Democracy in action.
Steve, you didn't offend me and I do get what you're saying about the economy and jobs. FedEx is practically in my backyard and I've accepted it and hope that it will provide good jobs for folks in NC but I'll never get over what was done to the gorgeous land along Old Oak Ridge Rd.

They don't need to buy any airbags from us.......they'll copy ours and make them in their own factories

Interestin' stuff, Steve. Pappy ain't had a chance to peruse it all yet.
It's a shame growth so often means destruction of one thing or another. The world's gettin' smaller on us.
Maybe we need to get Jacob to skip Spanish lessons fer a bit an' larn us all Chinese, now that we've all mastered EspaƱol! Hee hee!

Good morning everyone. (No, I didn't sleep this late!)
Glad you checked in Steve-O. Wonderful photos. Very educational.
You are right. It IS scary watching China in the race to "super-power" status while America is left in the dust. And we are just sitting here watching it happen.
HEY KRIS!
Been missing you a lot! Having a good summer so far?

We went to the "office" to talk.....wasn't A/C'd there either, had sweat pouring off us. I asked for a glass of water, it was served room temp, they don't chill the water.
OK, NO. Have you see the water there? Are you looking at the pictures that you are sending? I think this is worse than Mexico. Please don't drink the water!!!!!!

Might ought to tell you..........in the event I leave what looks like a half done posting, the internet infrastructure over here is so frail, I get dropped off alot without warning, so instead of previewing stuff, I have to post it then go back and edit it.
Anyway, take a look out the window at some familar company names here, and the traffic flow..........if one didn't know better, you could mistake this shot for Atlanta, Chicago, or NYC, instead of Shanghai China

Common site over here.
This guy is fortunate, he has a bicycle.......many have rick-shaws, the kind you walk in front of with two handles.
Sorry about the right handed shot...........these taxi's are nuts, hard to get good photos.

I mentioned earlier about getting scammed by a taxi. Seems like it's a common occurence. The link below is to the Shanghai daily newspaper, in English for Americans.....I linked an article warning about the trend.
Once you're linked in, you can buzz the rest of the newspaper to see the news in Shanghai. Gee Patti, looks like you benchmarked the Shanghai Daily Website when you had the NWO website redone??????????? NOW WE KNOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howz this for service?
The "meter maid" sits by the scooters on a chair, hands out the citations when you run over time, then you have to pay him before you can claim your ride.
This young lady is paying up.

One of the things that really floors me about China is the attention to landscaping.
Notice on this shot the highway above, then down and to the left........have beautiful trees in pots along the entire length of the road. All are perfectly manicured.

This was one sample stall in the market where I bought (fake imitations) Louis Viton, Christian Dior, and CoCo whazzername purses for $12 & $15, more Tommy Bahama shirts for $10. Barely enough room to turn around, there are hundreds of stalls like these.
The WTO is pressuring Shanghai to shut down this market due to all the fakes. Therefore all the merchants were fire sale-ing their merchandise to get rid of it. Supposedly this market shuts down 30 June......but it will pop up somewhere else.
The tactics were un-real. They all have calculators, quote some ridiculous price, (there's 8 Chinese dollars to the US dollar), ie $500 Chinese dollars ($62.50 USD). I take the calculator and put in $100.00 ($12.50 USD). They don't speak English but know key terms like "you're not being serious, what is your real price". After 2 or 3 rounds, where you hold firm, you walk away. I had 2 girls follow me at least 50 feet on separate occasions, lock their hands around my wrist, I try to keep walking......like dragging the dog to the vet.
Kept telling them "$100.00, no more", they keep saying "not enough money, be serious", but wouldn't turn loose.........a tactic like this in the USA would be assault & arrest. In virtually every case, they will drop to whatever you offer.
One girl said "I don't like you", when I said "OK, I'll leave", it's "no no no, tell me your price". I guess she decided she liked my money more than me.
Bought a huge Samsonite suitcase to carry all the stuff back......started at $150.00, ended at $25.00.
Never have I seen such a system......the good part is, even if the fakes fall apart when I get them home, they were so cheap, it won't bother me. Totally enjoyed the experience.
Dern, another photo showing up below.......sorry again, don't know why this happens
