One other tidbit I left off last night....when walking around Shanghai, there is a noticeable lack of CHILDREN.   You've probably heard the stories about china cracking down on their population boom.

I saw very few children, and VERY few pregnant women.  Interestingly, the small children I did see appeared to be of other nationalities.  Guess there's always a way to get around the system.

Didn't mention before, but we flew into the Shanghai Pudong (poo-dong) airport, it's only about 5 years old, and on the outskirts of Shanghai, been staying in a Ramada Inn at the airport.  Today we're relocating to a hotel in downtown Shanghai (Sheraton), so will probably have more things to share later.

Dinner last night left a little to be desired,   Roast Pigeon, Fish soup with head included..........GROSSSSSS.     And chinese don't eat sweets, so desert is when you get up and leave the table.

Later............SMS

Pappy I hope you got all those skeeters good and likkered up so they'll crash into a tree or somethin' before reaching my house! tee hee!!

Hate those little buggers!

Steve how depressing!  No babies AND no dessert! Reckon ol' 00-Dewayne was trying to save us from communism all along by flinging that donut propaganda our way and we just didn't get it?

You have fun traipsin' around the orient while we take a little snooze.  See ya in the mornin'!

We are now in downtown Shanghai, I'm staying in a Sheraton as I mentioned before.

It is simply mindboggling what the chinese economy is doing to account for the mounting economic boom.

Attached is a photo out my window.  There are many large buildings.  Those with glass on the outside are office buildings.  Those without glass are apartment buildings for the people.........they stretch as far as the eye & camera can see.

You call tell them from the satellite dishes, & the laundry flopping in the breeze.

The chinese gov't owns all the land, therefore all the buildings have 99 year leases on the land.   No private owners of land.  And they are all occupied, with many more underconstruction.

I heard an unofficial estimate 1/3 of the worlds building cranes are in China......don't know about the 1/3, but the number is huge.

This is another shot outside my room.

the point here is......the landscaping all over the city is immaculate.   The entire city is pristine clean, no trash blowing around.

It's pretty obvious a large chunk of the overall infrastructure here is not much over 5 years old.

Not allowed to own guns over here......feel perfectly safe walking down the street.

Good Morning all.....

Steve, I am LOVING this education on China! Keep 'em coming!!!!!

Do people own land in other areas of China?  I mean does that govt. owning land thing only mean in the big cities or is it countrywide?

Amazing!

Whoa! Hope Dwayne don't read that. He'll be wantin' to outlaw young'uns. That'll solve the park and ballfield problem.

That thought crossed my mind Pappy, but I didn't wanna give Dunkin' any ideas. ;)

Communism is country wide.  The farmers pay a small lease to the government for farming the land.  However, when the government sees bigger $$$$ from the prospect of factories & housing, they cancel the lease to the farmer, pay him a token amount to relocate his farm, and up goes the factory & housing.   The problem is......they may want him to relocate hundreds of miles away....therefore farmer has choice of giving up farming and going to work for the factory that is getting plopped on his land, or moving his farm & family away to unknown parts and waiting for it to happen again.

Therefore......many factory workers are former farmers.  China has zero unemployment, getting a job & the cheap housing that goes with it is no problem. Trouble is......the job probably only pays $100 / month

Transportation over here is:
  • Walk
  • Bicycle
  • Motor Scooter (mixed motor & electric) you can see them in the background
  • Taxi
  • Bus
  • VERY FEW private vehicles, but on the increase
Tonight was the first time we got scammed by a taxi, the first one took us on a half hour ride and ran the bill up to $20.00 (overall taxi's are still pretty cheap)

The second one (return) brought us back in about 5 minutes for $4.00

See jpeg, you'll get  taste for the transportation

Good catch Pappy, they do drive on the RH side over here just like USA.  Surprised me too.  Don't know about Hong Kong.......Japan drives on LH.

It is pristine clean......funny part is they don't seem to have some of the EPA requirements like USA.  The buses belch out the black smoke pretty badly.

China is a huge labor resource......big copy cats.  They go to trade shows, ie European Union, cannot take photos, but they can sure draw good.  They draw stuff, the come back home, in a couple weeks, whammo they've got a copy cat product right down to the same defects.  Engineering skills are still lagging, but won't be for long.

Well, now you see how western-ized China is getting.

I told you we had a bad experience with dinner last night, not much better for breakfast, so walking around we saw hooters and decided to try the wings.

Well, recipes are not international.  First time I ever sent a margarita back for being un-drinkable.  Same for my colleagues frozen margarita.

Ordered some wings, they were cooked to a crisp, just about cooked the meat out of them.

We're not starving, but our eating experiences have been somewhat marginal so far.

Thanks SMS!  The little crackers are all hovered around the computer reading your posts and looking at the photos.  Keep them coming!

All I have to say is "Steve posted!" and they ZOOM to the computer to see what's going on over there!

It's amazing how ignorant I am when it comes to other countries....especially communist countries.  God bless the USA!

Spoose wants to see a photo of the outside of that maglev train if you have one.  If not, we'll google it.

Spoose would probably enjoy some photos of the Hooter's gals to, but I won't be showing himmer those!

Plumb interestin', Steve! Much obliged fer takin' the time.

Hooters in Chiney? Somethin' just ain't quite right about that...

Pappy read somewhere they were gonna let 'em vote online fer the color they wanted their garbage trucks to be! I think that was Shanghai, er one o' them places. Sorta lettin' 'em practice votin' on somethin' so when an' if their form o' democracy happens, the people'll have some skills. Good idee, I reckon. (Some folks over here need some votin' skills if'n you ask me.)

Too bad about the food. I reckon if'n you were there longer, you'd figger out the good eatin' places.

Wish they'd give the bike riders over here somewhere to ride. Saw a bunch of 'em out playin' in the road yesterday. Dangerous if you ask me.
