It's Blue Monday: The Unhappiest Day Of The Year
(CBS4) LONDON
If you find yourself feeling a little depressed and down this Monday, chances are you're not alone.
British psychologist Cliff Arnall has designated January 22, 2007 as Blue Monday – the most miserable day of the year.
Arnall used a mathematical equation to determine that Jan. 22 is the gloomiest and most depressing day of the year.
His equation takes into account six factors: bad weather, unpaid Christmas bills, post-Christmas fatigue, failed New Years resolutions, low motivation levels and the feeling of a need to take action. Taken together, they calculate to equal "Blue Monday."
"The truth is a lot of people feel down at this time and a lot of people have depression as well, particularly men, and they don't want to talk about it," Arnall said.
Arnall said that by understanding the main factors for depression, we can prevent becoming unhappy next year.
"Use the day as a springboard for a higher quality life," he told the London Daily Mail. "For example, keeping Christmas spending to a strict budget next year will make you less depressed in the last week of January.
"Also, decide on changing behavior, such as giving up smoking, eating better, exercising more and getting that new job," he said.

Speaking of being depressed and feeling the need to take some action.....
Pappy, How's your plan to eat healthier going??
I know I'm not doing so well with my plan to eat better and exercise more.....
I'm about to decide I just need to buy some decent walking shoes and get out and walk an hour a day.... It's cheap, good exercise, and you can keep up with what's going on in the neighborhood!!! Plus, if I do it right, I might not have to cut back on the food part all that much!! ♥♥♥

Eatin' healthier is actually goin' good. Pappy's plan is simple. Less fat, more whole grains, fruits an' vegetables. Any amount o' whole grain, fruits an' vegetables counts toward my goal, since my only goal is more.
My exercise goal is also simply to do more. Right now, I'm noddin' my head while I type. That extra movement goes in the plus column.

Thanks for the Birthday wishes. It was a good one. I stayed home from work with the sick little Lacka. I don't know that he was really sick. I think it had something to do with that red slushie that he had yesterday morning at Walmart.....before breakfast. Yeah I know, don't talk to me about my chair at the mother of the year banquet.
So he had this slushie and he must have ordered the larger than little Lacka size because the cup was bigger than he was. And YES he was unsupervised in the food coral. I was standing in the jewelry department where I could see him, only a few feet away from him. I just couldn't hear him ordering the larger than little lacka size.
When I saw him come out I thought oh my......but I was worried because I was going to a party that I had to buy 3 gifts for, and it was sleeting. I was really worried about driving home, because the hummer (its not a hummer it is my old jeep that hums when you start it, the littla Lackas named it the hummer) had a dead battery and I had to drive the new car, in the slick. So the slushie had to go on the back burner, well not the burner because it would have most certainly melted, but you get it. I didn't really even think much more about it.
The little Lacka sucks down the slushie in about four sips. I guess he did that because there are no slushies allowed in the car.
So he is complaining of a headache and stomach ache. Well Duh can you say brain freeze? Too much slushy? Too much red dye? So he is sick for about 12 hours and I missed work today. On a cold, Blue Monday....all because of the brain freeze.

Waytogo,
Re: Spanking the "terrible" out of the twos.
I heard on PBS radio, I believe, that the law they were trying to pass in CA applied only to spanking children 3 years old or younger. I guess the CA legislature believes that once a child turns four, parents can spank them all they want. I have four children and have never spanked any of them at any age or even implied that I would if necessary. I have used all sorts of other methods to guide their behavior in directions I deem appropriate. Some methods are described in the website: behavior.org. As far as I know my offspring are all fairly well adjusted, and have not had conduct problems. Occasionally I have even told them to do a schoolwork assignment for me by telling me a way to practice being a bit bad in class the next day. Sometimes I've warned the teacher.
In my opiinion spanking children, especially very young ones, is an archaic practice mostly used by persons who are either unaware of alternative ways of promoting constructive action or who are, for their own reasons, are so emotionally involved in their child's compliance that they lose all objectivity and react impulsively. I my opinion if spanking is used at all with older children it should be done in a deliberate, controlled manner that includes other positive means of supporting more adaptive choices.
