On a more serious note , the angel tree located at the Stokesdale Fire dept. has a lot of angels left on it. You can go by the station and pick one up , the station is manned 24/7. Thanks in advance!
Thanks, ff12!!! I'll try to go by there tomorrow and get one! ♥♥♥

Can you explain the angel tree and 'angels' for those folks who may not know what this is and how it works? Thanks!

Macca, just supposing now, but what would you and all of our friends here on the Forum think of the idea of you also picking up a 2nd angel to which we as a group from the Forum could jointly support and contribute.
You can count me in if the idea appeals to ya'll!
We did it with a communal brick for the Summerfield Park and this could be our ongoing legacy for supporting NW projects.
Whaddaya think?

Where is the Stokesdale Firedepartment. My 2 daughters and I usaually do an angel apiece and we have such a good time.
Jim These angels are children whose parents go to an agency/the Salvation army I think and put down a list of things their kids want for Christmas but they can't afford, Usually one toy and then some practical things. The person giving it does not wrap the gifts and the parents then get to go and wrap the gifts and give them to their kids. We average about $50 an angel usually. Some years bikes can be a problem because nobody has them on sale.
I would be glad to contribute also if somebody wants to be responsible for buying the gifts.

The Stokesdale Fire Department is located on Main Street (Highway 158) right in the middle of the block containing all the old stores and Town Hall. It is in the same location as the old train depot used to be.

The folks in charge of the Angel Tree this year have extended the deadline because they have so many folks needing assistance. I think they had originally asked that all purchases be in by Dec. 13 but are now asking that they be in by the 20th.
They are constantly adding more names to the tree. They think this is because there have been so many layoffs and cutbacks at local businesses.
We had our final parade committee meeting last night and were talking about the Angel Tree a little. (This is sponsored by Good Samaritan Ministries, a program that includes around a dozen churches in the Stokesdale area. GSM has a food pantry and provides assistance with paying rent and utility bills and paying for medications for needy people in our area throughout the year. At Christmas, they also sponsor the Angel Tree, located at the Fire Station.) GSM also holds "5th Sunday Singing" throughout the year to draw attention to the needs. They meet at different churches and local groups are featured. Donations are collected each time. I think there is usually a notice about these in the NWO.
We learned at this meeting that there may be more than one angel on the tree for each child. They broke down the list of wants/needs instead of asking one person/family to provide it all. For instance, the one my family got was for a 10-year-old boy and it only had clothing items listed on it. We were told that we should ONLY buy what is on our angel, b/c someone else will be buying other things. If we add something else to what we are asked to buy, it may throw off the balance for that family. (One child may get more than another......)
Just thought I'd share. We had one committee member who had picked an angel for a 2-year-old girl and it only asked for clothing. She wanted to get a doll for her as well, and that is what sparked this conversation.
Hope to see you all at the parade on Saturday! You could pick up angels while you're in town! As ff12 and Jim said, they are located on a tree inside the fire station. Boy Scouts will be sellng BBQ sandwiches outside the station (If you get there early enough --- They always run out!!) and one of the local churches is setting up a small area across from it (on one of the side streets) to play music to entertain folks while they wait.
By the way, LottieDottie: I keep thinking I'm seeing myself on the forum! You and I have the same avatar!

Mawnin', y'all.
I'd keep the jug up front. These days Pappy likes 4 wheels, a heater, an' a cupholder fer my java in the mornin'. The cupholder fer java is also known as a portable life support system. I can do without the heater an' even go down to 3 wheels if I have to, but I gots to have my cup holder.
Well, Pappy's gotta go gnaw on a biscuit er two an' see what devilment I can instigate today. Hee hee!

Vicki. Thanks for bringing this all to our attention. I will gently prod the breakfast crowd up at the Family Diner this morning to pick up an angel today and support this project, and I will drop by the Fire Station this morning and pick up a few myself.
Most of us are so tremendously blessed with good jobs, good health, and wonderful families that we sometimes can forget those who are less visible but have suffered some tragic loss and have not been as so blessed with good tidings in their lives.
Jesus is the reason for the season and what a wonderful way of honoring his birth than by giving back some of the blessings he has so richly bestowed upon us.

Morning all! I am really a summer person but this morning with the partial moon, not too cold and absolute quiet as I walked down to let the chickens out was pretty wonderful. Felt so much like Christmas. Everybody have a really great day.

Good morning everybody!!!
I rode out lookin' for Steve-O this mornin' so I could wave at him but couldn't find him......
Jane's right. It is wonderful out there today! I love winter! In fact, I love every season except August.
I got an angel off of the Stokesdale tree as well. There were only 2 items on the angel and those items weren't that expensive. I'd certainly be willing to contribute to one more angel.

I contacted the President of Good Samaritan Ministries to find out how folks could do this if they wanted to contribute to a fund. She said checks could be made payable to Good Samaritan Ministries of Stokesdale, Inc. and mailed to PO Box 202, Stokesdale, NC 27357. She said you could designate it for the Angel Tree fund or you could just know that they give assistance as needed. In addition to the things I listed earlier this morning, she said they also get lots of requests for heating bills. She said that families of kids who have angels on the tree many times have food needs as well, and GSM gives them bags of food when they deliver the gifts.
So, if you all have someone who can coordinate for you as a group that's great, but otherwise, you could make a donation and someone else can do the shopping as needed. She said they have people who go out and shop for any angels not taken, and the money could definitely be used. You could even make it in the name of the forum if you wanted, I guess.....
Don't know if this was exactly what you were looking for, but it's one way to accomplish what you were talking about, I think. Definitely less work for whoever might be the one to coordinate getting the money in and then going shopping....
