Crackah, I too had the opportunity to meet Jim Carville many moons ago, actually before he ran Bill Clinton's first campaign for the presidency, and became even more famous. Back then, he had just run and won the 1990 US Senate race up in Pennsylvania for Harris Wofford who surprisingly beat former Pennsylvania Governor and US Attorney General Dick Thornburgh for the senate seat. Thornburgh was the handpicked candidate of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and Carville engineered a major upset and was just beginning to be a hot property media darling on the Washington political scene. I was in Washington for a week long campaign and elections seminar and Jim Carville was one of the speakers and he is not only hilarious with his humor, but a genius with his political strategies and techniques as well. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend several hours with him one afternoon and it was one of the peak learning experiences of my life. I learned things that day I have never forgotten and have often put to use in political campaigns for others. That was all back in the days when I was a real political junkie.

......Been out of Town since last week doing the hardest thing I had to do since being a Dad for the last 25 years. It does get harder the older the kids get.

I went down to Fort Stewart to see my youngest son go off to war. I'm proud of him. Here is my baby who could do anything he wants joining the Army. He was not forced to join , he volunteer. I have seen his paycheck, he didn't do it for money. He didn't need to join for GI bill to go to college, he did go to college for a short time, but it wasn't for him. We did not have a strong military family background. His Grandfathers did serve back in the 1950's and his older brother was in the Marines a few years back. He has lost a very close friend and classmate from Northwest before he joined last February knowing that he would be sent overseas. I can still see them playing Army in the backyard as young boys, breaking Granny's flower pot with their BB gun or paint all over the trees from the paint ball gun. Now one is gone and the other is on the way to the same battlefield. He knows what the price is to be free and he still volunteer.

It was 5:00 AM this past Monday Morning when we met in a dark parking lot on base with about 80 more soldiers that was leaving with my son. About half of them had no family to see them off. I seen a few soldiers walking around with their M4 and M16 rifles carrying their little babies in one arm. It will be 12 to 18 months before they could see them again. Some would be going on their 3rd tour and leaving a wife with 3 kids. My son was leaving his wife of 2 months for his first tour.

I watched my son after getting his M4 inspect his rifle. In the dark he adjusted to his needs. He put on a laser, scope and  flashlight to his rifle. He added a few things we had got a couple of days ago at the PX to make it shot better and hold up in Iraq. By watching him in the dark I knew he had been well trained on his rifle. By daylight every soldier was walking around with a rifle. Around 9:00 some of the soldiers with no family started playing tag. Yes thats right, they were running around like on a school yard playing tag. Soon other soldiers with their family join in and started playing. It did help to take the edge off and bond families together.

A little after 10:00AM it was time for them to march out and for family to leave. They started to put on all their equipment. You could see them care for each other to make sure each piece was in the right place. All the buckles and straps had to be in the right place. This was real teamwork. The vest with all the metal in it felt like it was 50lbs by itself. Add the pack, guns and helmet it becomes quit a load. Then it was like a 2 minute warning, time to go. Everyone was trying to get in the last kiss and hug. Every American should have to see this in person to see the real price of freedom. I watch as my soldier marched down the road and into harms way.......

Wow Mike.  That was unbelievable.  Please thank your son for me and thanks to you and his mama for sharing him with us.

I'll be sure to think about him a lot and pray for him. and when you get an address for him and some of his buddies who don't have lots of family, perhaps we could send them cards or letters.

Mike, that was one of the most endearing and inspiring stories I have ever read. Thank you for sharing your deepest fears and fatherly pride with us, and please keep us abreast of how your son is doing in service to our country. If there is anything I or we can ever do to help you or your son or his comrades, please let us know. You, he and they will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My family thanks you all.....Pappy thats a mighty good looking flag...

Heard from my son last night in a 1 minute phone call, he has landed in Kuwait. He will be there for a few days to pick-up equipment and then go in to Iraq.
