I might add that all of the area telelvision stations seemed to have satellite trucks at the accident scene, so I am guessing without knowing, that they will be showing live coverage of the accident scene aftermath. From my viewpoint about 200 feet from the intersection, it sure looked like one heck of a mess.

I came home to grab my digital camera and will head back up there to the area and see if I can get some photos which I can send to the NWO and possible post here.

Jim,
I heard that the fire truck has been hauled back down to the station.

The 5th graders were having their DARE graduation when this accident happened. They dismissed us a little before 2 pm in order to clear out as much traffic as possible before the buses tried to get in.... We had to detour around to get back home, b/c the accident site was between the school and our house. I went to Town Hall for a little while just to see what I could learn. I talked with the mother of two of the firefighters, who said they weren't hurt but were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

I saw on Ch. 12 a few minutes ago that 1,000 gallons of diesel spilled. A parent who got some pictures right after it happened said it appeared that the gasoline truck was traveling thru the area faster than it should have been.

Our principal just did a "call out" to all parents, saying she appreciated the cooperation in getting vehicles away from the school in an orderly way and that there was no evacuation, that they were just trying to clear traffic out as a way of helping with traffic.

There are sheriff's dept vehicles blocking access to that area of town so that traffic cannot get too close to that intersection.

Jim, Any pictures you can get would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure!

Anyone else who has any, feel free to pass them on!

Dang! For such a little town, we sure can have a big traffic jam when something happens! Wow! I guess we are so very lucky it wasn't worse! It took the little maccas twice as long as usual to get home.... I guess the bus drivers had to figure out different ways to get to where they were going....Thanks for the info about what happened, Jimbo and Vicki! ♥♥♥

Just to update everyone, I just got back from the intersection of Highway 68 and Highway 158 and crews are now pumping fuels from the overturned tanker into a Hilco tanker truck. Fire crews are still there in the same numbers as earlier this afternoon, as are Sheriff's Department units, the NC State Highway Patrol, two or three satellite television trucks and reporters, several Greensboro Fire Department trucks from Battalion 4, fire crews from the Greensboro Airport Fire Department, the State Highway Department trucks (both loaded either with sand or detour signs), the American Red Cross, officials from regional and state evironmental response teams, and I'm sure missed a few others. The fire department has set up tents and brought in food and drinks for their crews and it would appear they will be there for quite some time into the evening. All of the roads in the downtown area are either blocked or detouring traffic away from the accident scene. I did notice detour signs in Oak Ridge at the Highway150 and Highway 68 intersection, and traffic along Highway 68 into Stokesdale this evening is all but non-existent.

Vicki, I did in fact take about 30 to 35 photos which I delivered by hand to Patti and Sandra at the NW Observer Offices in Oak Ridge as well as pass along what details I knew at that time (around 4:45 PM this afternoon). I will continue to monitor the accident scene as the night progresses and bring you up to date of any developments. The local television news reports will probably be able to report greater detail as the evening and events continue.

Vicki, a couple of more details which I missed in the earlier post.

You are correct that the Stokesdale Fire Department truck which was damaged has been towed back to the fire department.

The truck driver was taken to a Greensboro hospital for observation and as a precaution, but as of the the time of this edit, he has been released.

4 Stokesdale firemen have been transported by Guilford County EMS to Greensboro hospitals for observation and for precautionary checkups, but are not believed to be seriously injured. Those four are firemen Bryan & John Joyner, Elliott Wilson and Greg Westbrook. As of the time of the edit of this post, all 4 Stokesdale firemen have been released from the hospital and have returned to Stokesdale.

The insurance adjuster for EFIS which is handling the physical damage to the Stokesdale fire truck is present and inspecting the damages to the fire truck, which is expected to be a total loss.

Wow, Jim, I'd better watch out or you're going to get my job! I'm kind of on hiatus right now but trying to keep track of what's going on, but you're doing a much better job than I am!

I had heard that 3 of the firefighters were Brian Joyner, Jonathan Joyner and Elliott Wilson. Wilson and Jonathan Joyner are paid firemen. Brian has been a volunteer for several years. I don't know who the 4th one is, and didn't even know there was a 4th until the TV stations started reporting it.

I did hear that the truck driver was taken to the hospital too, but I haven't heard anything about his condition.

The news tonight said the detours would probably be in place until 5 AM I guess trying to get the diesel cleaned up off the ground. We had a detour sign at 150 and 220 this afternoon. My daughter could not  turn left or east on 150 tonight up around Henson Forest so she had to go to right and get across to Pleasant Rdge to get back to Scalesville rd and come home. She said traffic on 150 E was bumper to bumper as far as you could see.  It really could have been so much worse.  Jim you all were lucky up on that corner today.

Jane the Stokesdale firemen are also saying that the intersection will be blocked until at least 5 AM tomorrow morning.

I might also add that electric power along Highway 68 at least as far north as Lester Road and including along parts of Lester Road has been intentionally shut off while and until the fuel is removed from the overturned tanker truck.

All businesses around the 68/158 intersection remain closed and likely will remain closed until at least tomorrow.

To update this morning, the intersection of Highway 68 and 158 is now open and has been cleared. Both gas stations on the corner as well as the Family Diner are now open for business. There is a really strong smell of diesel fuel in the intersection area, and it would appear that some remedial environmental work remains yet to be done, with some equipment there along the highway this morning. There are at least 5 and probably more totalled or near totally damaged trucks on the lot at Bill's Truck Sales on the corner, and that whole corner really looks like a mess this morning. I am headed back down to the Family Diner for breakfast and am sure, I will be able to get some eye witness accounts of what happened, which I will share later today. Power north and along Highway 68 has been restored and there are no roadblocks or detours in the Stokesdale area at this time. Traffic started flowing on Highway 68 on a normal basis sometime this morning between 4 and 5 PM.

So things are more or less back to normal this morning in Stokesdale, with I am sure some pretty lucky yet tired Stokesdale firemen.

The pictures I saw on TV were ridiculously uninformative. You could not even tell what you were looking at.  For example, one shot was just showing the underside of the tanker and wheels like way zoomed in. They were not showing any wide angle stuff where you could tell what happened at all. So, I am looking forward to Jim's shots.
