That well-worn path goin' into them woods is, uh...a nature trail. Yeah, that's it.

Macca i wish. We are the farmer and pharmacist Doggetts. Cousins.
I thought you all might like to hear about my morning. My phone rang at 7AM with the post lady advising me that the chicks I had ordered were there and since they weren't open today she would open the window specially for me if I would come down.
Well the chicks weren't suppose to come until Wednesday. The brooder was ready but not warm. My husband assured me that they would be okay. So I brought this tiny little box that was emiting loud cheeps and things were thumping around in it home in 19 degree temperature. The chicks were not suppose to come until Wednesday because today was a holiday and the post office was closed. I opened this box up and inside were 25 or so of the cutest little puff balls screaming at the top of their lungs. You have to lift each one out and dip its beak in water and after you finish that you have to dip each one of their beaks in chick food. This is the first food and water they have ever had and they don't have a Mother to show the right way. They were hatched yesterday in Iowa, sorted and boxed and put in the mail yesterday afternoon.
Unfortunately the brooder was not warm enough so I lost 3 but now they are in the spare bedroom under a light looking much warmer and eating up a storm. Hopefully I won't lose anymore.
Baby chicks are how I know spring is coming. They are so cute.

Jane, I hafta admit, nuthin' much cuter than a passel o' baby chickens. Also, nuthin' much weirder than gettin' a order o' chickens through the mail.
I reckon if you keep on, you're gonna talk us into spring if we ain't careful. Howemsoever, I b'lieve you're fergittin' the fact that we already have a motion on the floor, uh, I mean on the roof, fer about 4 ft o' snow.

Pappy I do not believe I have been given suficient time to explain why I think it is time for Spring to come and I demand that it go down in the record that I did not get heard. Spring!! It is time for Spring!!
Now lets see what that old city paper has to say about that.

JAAAAAAANNNNNNEEEEE!!! I wanna see the baby chicks!!!!
I was gonna order myself a crate of 'em but I looked all through my Penny's catalog and didn't see nary a chick in there!
I'm a little concerned that they don't do the dipping of the beaks thing before shipping them out though... Granted, I don't know much about being a chicken parent, (my chickens aren't farm chickens anymore... they're citified and they serve only as my muses) but it makes me sad to think that those poor little fellers had to wait a whole day to eat!

Well you see Cracker if Mom was sitting on the eggs they might no eat for 2 or 3 days because all the eggs don't hatch at the same time and she sits for several days after the first one hatches and then takes them all off the nest at the same time and shows them how to be chickens. Usually she takes a dust bath first and all the babies stand around in a circle and worry about what she is doing. Then after she is clean enough to suit herself, she gathers all the chicks up and shows them how to eat and drink. A mother hen with her babies on the first day is the most wonderful sight you will ever see. She pecks at things on the ground and all the babies gather round her trying to figure out what she is doing. She justs talks and talks and they peep back.
Cracker you can come anytime you want but they will be the cutest for the next week.

Ummmmm, Jane..... I hate to ask this, but what do you do with these cute little chicks when they grow up? Do they just lay eggs for you, or do they become dinner throughout the year?
We had some friends who started getting chicks with the intent of raising them for eggs and for meals, but then they would name them and learn about their "personalities" and it was all over.... They'd eat the eggs, or give them away, when they could find them, but I think they just couldn't eat the chickens.....
