Hey a serious moment. I couldn't find any where in the NW school section to put this. Has anybody else read the letters to the editor in today's Sunday's News and record? There is a letter titled "Board Should Take aim at Northwest, Dudley" that needs some comment from NW if I understand what this writer is saying. Which is that the neighborhoods  at NorthWest are "cherry picked" along with the staff. Somebody else read the letter and see if there needs to possibly need to be an answer.

Will go get the paper soon as I'm out of my PJ's Jane!  Thanks for the heads up!

Jane,
I think (hope) the writer, who lives in Jamestown and is very much affected by Board of Ed actions in High Point, was trying to make a point. I've heard speakers at the public forums say the same thing, that if this way of assigning students is so great, then of course the rest of the system should get to benefit from it as well.

This is how the group that fought the "Choice Plan" from the very beginning tried to get support from the rest of the county, saying that once the Board/Grier were able to implement it in High Point, they would use it as a blueprint for the rest us. Time will tell.

I would think any response to this letter or any like it would be well-thought out, because otherwise we might be viewed negatively for saying we shouldn't be targeted. But then, why shouldn't we be more diverse out here? The writer is correct, at this point, we know -- based on where we live -- that our children can go to PUBLIC schools that will provide a good education for them. People in High Point and surrounding areas do not know which school their children will attend and many have strong preferences about where they'd like for them to go.... and like many of us, decided where to live based on the proximity of a particular school.

Alas, it was an eBay aution and the bids got a tad steep, for my liking. I wonder if that salvage yard on north 220 has one hiding in the back?

Vicky I think what caught my attention was the implication that all the kids in the Northwest district are going to Northwest High which is not so and will be less so next year when Northern is built.

Granted we do have excellent schools out here but is it because we are affluent and have excellent facilities. I think not. I think we have excellent shcools because we have extemely dedicated parents who prize education and work hard to see their kids get it.  I think that if you took these kids out of Northwest and bused them to Dudley you would still have extemely dedicated parents who prize education.

I am not sure what the answer is but to dismantle the schools that are doing it right because other areas aren't does not seem a good answer and maybe that is what the writer of the editoral was saying I don't know.  Maybe Jusdge Manning has gotten the school board and administrations attention and they will be able to do something to improve the underachieving schools.  It certainly does not seem that punishing the kids by snatching them out of their schools and bussing them is an answer.

I think diversity is an economic issue which we have every right to expect our Towns to address with to start with affordable housing so we get diversity.

Ok I am putting my soap box away. I could go on and on about the screwyness of things in education. The fact that what is it, 70% of the money goes to the administration while the teachers in the trenches not only don't get a fair wage they lots of time don't even get to go to the bathroom or eat lunch.

I should know better then read the eiditorials before breakfast.!!!!

I just finished reading the N&R and that letter did not sit well with me either Jane. If the writer has been affected by the poor decisions of the Board of Education for the High Point area, I feel for him, I really do.

BUT, if the Northwest area was similarly the victim of the BOE, I would never point the finger at or try to drag down other areas of the county to further our cause. It is possible to fight for or against something while maintaining integrity. I don't think that writer is doing it.

Aeolius, thanks for sharing! That is absolutely amazing! At the risk of sounding really stupid, what attracks the wildlife to that spot? The light? The camera - aspiring moviestar animals? :D Nice home you are building too!

We noticed all the food out... Are you not concerned about drawing wild animals to your property, or do you have enough land that you don't worry about drawing them to your actual yard? I know we've sometimes had problems with raccoons who come up if we leave food out for our pets. Your neighbors aren't going to be concerned that you are developing your own zoo? ♥♥♥

Macca, it looks like Aeolius has quite a large plot of land!

And, I am really stupid - I didn't notice/think of the food to attrack them to the area. DUH! It's nice to know there still are undeveloped areas for animals to live. I'm near Old Oak Ridge Rd where the land has been raped for FedEx :(

With four extra sets of eyes, you can bet they took it all in! It was like going on a little field trip from the comfort of our living room! No need to make sure everyone had on socks and shoes, long pants to protect the legs.... Of course, there were still a bajillion questions to answer!!!! ♥♥♥

Kris, I avoid that area now as much as possible. I felt as though I was going thru a war zone the first time I drove thru as they were wreaking all the havoc on that area. I actually cried as I remembered how pretty it had been thru there. My spoose said himmer had been thru there in the last day or so (out to New Garden Nursery) and was commenting on how awful it looked... So sad....:X
