Macca,
I am glad that your nephew is OK. What is with the trooper telling him if he gets the car inspected it will not cost anything. Can you imagine the look on the mechanic's face when they tow his car up and he tells them that he needs to get an inspection?

OMG I just realized how ridiculous that was. Sorry to hear about the accident. What a Catch 22.

macca, I'm very glad to hear your nephew was not hurt. You didn't mention his age, but I'm surmising he is on the young side. If you find a place that will inspect a totalled car, let us know, so we can stay away from it. I'm sure your nephews holidays just got a chunk taken out of them.
I work for an automotive safety restraints company, the #1 rule is WEAR YOUR SEATBELT. People bank alot on airbags & they're great for injury prevention, but most don't understand 80% of restraint comes from the seatbelt.
When working with the band boosters, I was surprised by the inconsistent usage of seat belts among the band students. One young man who also had an open top jeep told me "if I get in a wreck, I'll just hold onto the steering wheel" DUH !!!

I'm always surprised when I hear about traffic accidents and the young drivers and passengers weren't wearing seatbelts. These kids should have grown up putting on seatbelts as soon as they got in the car! I know my kids just automatically put them on. I can even remember my older son throwing a tantrum one time in the car because he got mad at me about something. He refused to let me buckle him into his car seat -- he might have been 3 or 4 -- and so I just acted like I was going to start the car anyway. He threw an even huger fit, as though he thought the car might explode if I started it without him being buckled in!
I guess some parents haven't stressed to their kids how important it is to wear them -- and it's such a shame, because as Steve pointed out, they make such a difference.
How many times have you heard a law enforcement officer say that a person who died probably would've survived if they'd been wearing a seatbelt? Or how many times has someone walked away from an awful accident with barely a scratch?

OMG yes, I have witnessed first hand adults not caring if their children put on their seat belts. This amazes me also vicki. People have to know that seat belts are a good thing, but I guess some don't care. And you are right again, children now days have grown up in seat belts, so you would think that they would feel naked without them...I do. Naky, Naky, Naky

Yeah it kills me to see people riding with their babies or small children in their laps too.
On a lighter note, Suppose Skiddles was in a near accident, would she leave skiddle marks?

It's funny how something triggers memories...
When I took my son to get his driver's license, while we were waiting (FOREVER!) in the DMV lobby, he was looking at the poster with the road signs on it.
On the one for slippery when wet, which shows a car with squiggly lines behind it, someone had written "Snakes chasing cars...."

She's in a "classic,"only seat belts in these... no shoulder straps. Steve you just can't see the belt because it is daintily tucked in at her waist.
SKIDDLES goes nowhere without buckling up! Yippy!

In just a matter of seconds yesterday I saw 2 of the 6 things that rile Pappy most!
I was traveling down 421 near the old airport (actually had just exited 68 onto 421) when a whomping SUV flat ran the red light to get onto 68. I thought he was ridiculous (the light was red before he even got to the intersection) but I'm sure the folks who had to wait to proceed thru their GREEN light were even more upset with him. (He was turning left from 421 to get onto the exit ramp to 68.)
While I was sitting at this red light, waiting to go straight, I noticed a bicycle approaching from the other direction. Now this was around 5:15 pm, not totally dark or anything, but also not bright sunshiny day. This joker (could have been a teen) had no reflective items on the bike (just a basic bike), he was wearing black, was NOT wearing a helmet, and was riding down the middle of the road -- kind of on the line between the two lanes! How incredibly smart! Couldn't he be ticketed? Improper gear (no helmet but on a public road)? In the middle of the road, not on the side? How traumatic would it be to be involved in an accident with such a yahoo, even if it wasn't your fault?

Good thing for both that the SUV running the redlight did not have a chance encounter with the camouflaged bicyclist (not biker; bikers ride HOGs)
