Tryptophan and turkey
According to popular belief, tryptophan in turkey meat causes drowsiness. Turkey does contain tryptophan, which does have a documented sleep-inducing effect as it is readily converted into serotonin by the body. However, tryptophan is effective only when taken on its own as a free amino acid. Tryptophan in turkey is found as part of a protein, and, in small enough amounts, this mechanism seems unlikely.
A more-likely hypothesis is that the ingestion of large quantities of food, such as at a Thanksgiving feast, means that large quantities of both carbohydrates and branched-chain amino acids are consumed. Like carbohydrates, branched-chain amino acids require insulin to be transduced through the myocyte membranes, which, after a large meal, creates a competition among the amino acids and glucose for insulin, while simultaneously creating tryptophan's reduced competition with other amino acids for the Large Neutral Amino Acid Transporter protein for transduction across the blood-brain barrier. The result is a greater availability of tryptophan, via the Large Neutral Amino Acid Transporter, for conversion into serotonin by the raphe nuclei, which is then available for conversion into melatonin by the pineal gland. Drowsiness is the result.
Macca, could you chart out all of that on the blackboard with the appropriate chemical symbols so I can study for my next chemistry test? I was following you there until you got to the raphe nuclei and then I started nodding off........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Drowsiness is the result.

Interestin' how all that stuff works! How in the world do they figger that out?
Besides the Large Neutral Amino Acid Transporter there's also the Large Ethyl Alcohol Transporter. In Pappy's case it's a Dodge Ram pickup with a Viper V10 under the hood. Hee hee!
Well, Pappy's synapses are 'bout done firin' fer the evenin'. Reckon I'll call it a night. Bon soir, mi amigos.

Morning all!! It is a beautiful morning out. Think I will try to work outside today some. That is as soon as I get all my dishes washed and put away. Hope everybody had a great day yesterday.
Thought it was tacky of Gary's to run over 10 minutes into ER last night.

Oh, Jane! They had advertised all along that they had to go over in order to cover the full story! (Probably in an effort to get folks to stay on ABC to watch the Mel Gibson interview about his new movie....) Wonder how many did? I wasn't one of them, although it probably wouldn't have mattered what I "watched," since my eyes were closed! ♥♥♥

Oh, Jimbo! There were several places that opened early today! In fact, Four Seasons Town Centre opened at 1:00 a.m.!!! More opened at 5:00!! ♥♥♥
According to one of the morning news shows, Four Seasons hired additional security and had about 20,000 people there between 1 and 5 am. Can you imagine???

Pappy just wouldn't consider goin' shoppin' till after Biscuitville opens anyway.
Goin' outside sounds like a good idee to me.
