Looks like both are acceptable with salt petre being the older version. Which makes sense because probably the most references to salt petre would be in older sources. Therefore salt peter (the newer spelling) is probably not mentioned as much in newer sources (books, stories etc) because of the need for salt petre. It is probably just referred to as gunpowder etc.

OK, trying to get my brain moving again, here is more trivia, after the guano discussion.
The Forum Front Page says there are 82 members. If you go to Members, and sort by Posts (click on posts), it will sort in descending order.
Take the first 16 members (20%), add up their posts, total = 1,787. Total posts is 2,058 1,787 / 2,058 = 87%.
It appears the 80/20 rule is roughly in effect, ie 20% of the members are making 87% of the postings.
Course, we skewed the numbers with our 10K mission last week, but I doubt we skewed them too much.
Having shared that piece of trivia......I will now go take some more Advil.

Excellent suggestion for one of the underutilized buildings in this area, macca. A boutique for organic, odorless (excuse me, odourless) poop.

Golly Ding(bat) ya'll found some interesting stuff to discuss today!
Sorry I wasn't here much... been playin' with my Christmas present!
Guano... first heard of it on that Crocodile Hunter show.... Seems Bat guano gets old Steve-O (Irwin..... not Adkins) all excited! According to him it's slippery stuff that smells to high heavens! If I'm not mistaken we saw him take a taste of it... I am sure it was for ratings....
Bama... I never doubted that you were as accurate as the internet.
I do find it interesting however that you did not mention the other historical uses of Saltpeter (Maybe I missed it in my forum jumping).... Meat curing being one..but interestingly enough, it seems that due to it's chemical make-up, potassium nitrate (KNO3), some doctors believed it was useful in cooling the male "ardor", and the more tyrannical commanders (navy mainly) would administer it to their soldiers in their food....Didn't do much more than give them a righteous tummy ache though!
I also want it noted that bama posted in a font other than the one shem normally uses... now himer is gonna say it's because himer cut and pasted from the dictionary, but I did want it noted......just the same.
macca... I can't tell you how good it is to have you back! It was rough doing this without my third in command....
Tomorrow it's back to the old grind....It's been a great week ya'll!
Check in when you can!!

Cracka, Glad you clarified that it was Steve-O Irwin and not our very own Steve-O Adkins who got so excited about the guano that he decided to take a bite! Wouldn't that be something for the papparazzi to get hold of!
In all our talk about guano, I am glad this is another instance when we don't have smell-o-vision. I'd personally rather smell black-eyed peas and collards, disgusting as they smell. (my opinion only...)

You never know what kind of "fertile" inspiration you're gonna "dig up" on this site. Ahh, bat guano! Source of both fertilizer (positive) and foul stench (negative). That's potent symbolism there! The Taoists have used the ingenious intertwined Yin/Yang symbol as an expression of the opposing dual forces of nature for many centuries. But knowing what we do (hee hee, I said "do") of bat guano and opposing forces, I think it serves us well to keep an open mind. Consider: when casting about for a suitable symbol to characterize local "doings", there may be times when only bat guano will "do".
(Pappy couldn't let that one go by without comment. I'm goin' back to sleep, now. I'm "pooped.")Last edited on Jan 2nd, 2006 08:52 pm by FatPappy

Sometimes "coming out" with so much "fertilizer" just wears a body out, right Pappy?
