Yes I have. I have also emailed people I know in Summerfield asking them to comment also. I hope that the NWO gets lots of good positive response.

Thanks, Scuba Jane! acook and PaulW have voiced their opinions in emails to Cindy.
I agree with FatPappy's comment from 10/25/2005 in Concerned Citizens. "We just need to make a little noise ourselves and reach a larger audience: letters to the editor (NWO and mumbled name), letters to council, continue on the forum. The forum is getting there. People are reading."
The forum sure is "getting there." Didn't we have 46 members just a few weeks ago or am I just confused? 92 members as of this moment...and growing!
I'm going to post this in Has our online forum been helpful forum.

There's a new Community Park topic under Summerfield. There's also a park poll. Y'all go on over and
MAKE SOME NOISE!

Jane, I've added a topic and a poll asking Summerfield residents if they support the town moving forward on the community park (thanks Fat Pappy -- you spotted that as soon as I put it up!).
Please tell everyone you know to come to the forum, post their comments, and vote on the poll. Also, just want to point out that while some of you have a "code name" on this forum, if you do send Cindy Reise your comments for our community survey, using your real name may make your responses more authentic in the eyes of our public officials.
We'll be glad to compile all of your comments, those posted here and the ones we receive via email, and send them to the town council members. We'll also publish them in an upcoming issue.
Remember, the more responses we get to Cindy's survey and on our online forum, the more weight it will carry -- she can be reached at cindy@nwobserver.com. Thank you for helping to publicize this survey and the question on this forum!

I'm changing the subject just a little (since there is now a specific forum where to address the Community Park issue- Thanks EditorPS!).
The Center for Education, Imagination and the Natural World at Timberlake Farm may be of interest to several of you out there. The following is a description of the center and its mission, which I took directly from their website (http://www.beholdnature.org):
"The Center for Education, Imagination and the Natural World is dedicated to affirming and renewing the human/earth relationship in the context of contemporary education."
"The Center is located at Timberlake Farm, a 165 acre earth sanctuary in the foothills of North Carolina - a unique place of beauty with wildflower meadows, an organic garden, five miles of gentle woodland trails, small streams and twin lakes . It is a setting where time unwinds, wheels stop spinning, and the presence of the natural world can be fully experienced."
They are offering a free study group for parents called "Last Child In The Woods." It is a four week study group focusing on Richard Louv's book, Last Child In The Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder.
Participants will "explore together some of the practices that prevent children from playing outside including: time spent with computers, television and video games, overly structured childhood activities, fears concerning safety, neighborhood designs and covenants, and the demands of school."
The study group will meet on Thursday mornings, 2/2 - 2/23, from 9:30 am - 11:30 am. Check the center's website for directions (Whitsett, NC) and reservation information.
Since the timing of this study group would probably be difficult for most of us, let me know if anyone is interested in forming a discussion group here in Summerfield.
I thought a few people might at least be interested in reading the book...but I included the rest of the information above just in case.

acook I have another, I hope new, school to add to your list, Bishop McGuinness High School. The students have to complete ?# community service hours per year. Every student is in a club and the two clubs, Environmental club and Green Thumb club are interested in "park" hand-on programs. Contact person: Mr. Ekland.

Great! Bishop McGuinness High School was not on my list. Thanks for the contact name. We'll see how things go at the Parks & Rec mtg on Thursday and determine what to do next.

acook -- thanks for opening up this discussion. conserving land and critical habitats is an extremely important issue to me, especially since natural areas in Summerfield/Oak Ridge are rapidly disappearing along with much of the wildlife that lived in the previously undeveloped areas. I'm definitely interested in starting/joining a discussion group or active conservation group that will focus on conserving local natural areas and protecting wildlife habitats. Check out the Piedmont Land Conservancy, you'd probably be interested in what they do. http://www.piedmontland.org/

The Piedmont Land Conservancy is a wonderful organization. If you want to work with them, you don't necessarily have to turn your land over to them now. You can set it up so you continue to have use of your property throughout your lifetime, and then it goes to the Conservancy after your passing.

The Summerfield Conservation Council is getting ready to reorganize after a hiatus. We have had people come forward with an interest in natural habitats , open space and water conservation issues. I am attempting to to hold the first meeting on 3/30/06 @ 7:00 at Town Hall. If you are interested in coming and having input please come. I think this is such a vital issue for our town and we need people to be good stewards of their town.
Let me know if there is anybody out there on the forum who would like to come join in. Email me if you are interested in being on the email list about conservation issues @ doggettja@bellsouth.net.
We have some immediate projects being talked about. One is having a table at the founders day in May where kids can build bat or bird houses to either take home or donate to the park.
We need lumber, nails, hammers and people to supervise and help hammer. Let me know if anybody out there has any sources for the the supplies. I do think we have the plans.

Jane ~~ somehow I missed this post. Is the conservation council currently meeting?
I was very busy around Founder's Day and I am unaware if you were able to have your tent and build your houses with the kids.
Several years ago I would take my kids to a workshop at Home Depot. It was just for kids on Saturday morning. They would go in and get their kit for the project. They did make bird houses and bat houses and many other things.
The kits that they had were pre packaged and had all of your supplies in the package. Pre cut lumber, nails, screws, whatever you needed. The directions that came with the kit were simple to read and they even had drawings if the kids couldn't read. Home Depot would supply the hammers glue, and screw drivers. They even had small Home Depot aprons for the kids to wear that they could put their name on.
Perhaps Home Depot might be interested in donating or selling for a small fee some kits for your next event. It would be a great way to get the kids involved, maybe you could do something like this at the park. I would be willing to help the kids with painting the completed projects.

Great idea, Lacka. I think it would be great to have kids build something like simple bluebird houses or bat houses. They could learn something in the process about what they are trying to attract and why they are beneficial (bug control!!!). They could take them home and put them up in their own yard, or they could "donate" them and they could be put up in the park.
