Welcome to the forum JamesAttaway!  :D

Good idea!  Haven't been on a bear hunt since I was a youngun'!

We'll keep a lookout over here in SF for bears, but I doubt I'll be the one doin' the spottin' .... See, I've got these yard deer, and they've been watchin' over my maters and keepin' the bears out!

Glad you joined us!

James keeps telling me about these bears, but I can't track them down!!:D

I've talked with several folks in town but I haven't even been able to find anyone who's heard about them before I told them about them. :?

I even called the sheriff's department and animal control, because I heard that animal control officers had come out and maybe even saw them. So far, nothing!

James suggested that we should start this thread, and I'm glad he did. Maybe we can find those bears now!

Welcome to the forum, JamesAttaway! This here is a good idee. Pappy ain't seen no bears so far in Summerfield but I have seen some political critters diggin' in the garbage lookin' fer tasty tidbits. Hee hee!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'll save that kind o' stuff fer another thread.)

Seriously, bears or not, what with the all the rabid critters around, it pays to keep yer eyes on your young'uns an' yer animals.

Welcome, James Attaway!! :D

I've heard rumors of bear sightings around, but haven't actually talked with anyone who's seen one.... I hope I'm not the one who sees it, unless I'm far far away, looking thru binoculars!!!

My neighbors on Ellisboro Rd say that several people on Ellisboro and Gideon Grove roads saw the big one one afternoon recently. Just hearsay, but for what its worth. I'm still gonna wear my bearproof overalls when I go out.

Okay.... Got any extra "bearproof overalls"?

Any ideas what we are to do if we see a bear? I've heard you shouldn't run, and that they can climb trees, so what should you do if the bear sees you???

The key to surviving a bear attack is rather simple: you just have to be able to run faster than the fellow beside of you.

So I guess the trick is to make sure you don't go out walking where there might be a bear with anyone you care about!! :D:shock:

They look more like 80 proof to me! That might be the feller you wanna go walkin' with, Macca! If the sight o' them britches don't scare the bears off, at least you might stand a good chance o' outrunnin' that feller. He looks like he takes his pain med'cine at reg'lar intervals, too, should it come to that. Hee hee!

We live on Ellisboro Rd in Rockingham County and my wife claims to have seen a bear 2 nights in a row at about 3-4 am about a week or so ago when she was taking our dog out. I still don't think I believe her but maybe I will give it some thought now.

She did claim to see a coon in our living room one night when there obviously was nothing in there. -No Pappy she has not been in the sauce. hahah

bama -- Shame on you for not believing your wife! You'd feel AWFUL if something happened to her or your dog! NOW you need to show her how much you believe her by taking the dog for a walk yourself!!

So, what was the critter in the living room??? Cat?? Stuffed animal?? Too much spicy food???

A coon in the living room???  That is sooooo funny!

Macca, I was also gonna suggest that bama give Mrs. bama a break and take that pooch out bear huntin' himself!

Maybe he should just buy her a video camera... that's how I proved that the deer were eatin' our maters and there was a hawk stalkin' the chickens from the swingset....

James, that's a mighty handsome Corgi you got there.... At first glance, I thought you'd captured a photo of one of those rabid foxes!

Sandra- The nudist camp is up where 220 runs into 68 isn't it. It is called the Bar S Ranch. Think about it.  Rick Brown who has the hot air ballon has the funniest story about the Ranch. Ask him to tell you sometime.

No, the camp is on 158 West near Midway on the way from Stokesdale to Reidsville. It's actually quite well marked with a prominent sign.

Hey Mister Jim,,,

If this has any bearing, do you have to be bare when you go watching bare bears?Do you watch beer drinking bare bears at the bare bear beach, and drink Budwiser beer while watching bare budwiser beer drinking bare beach bears drink beer and play bare bear beach basket ball from a beech tree? All this talk about watching bare beach bears drink budwiser beer and play bare bear beach basketball from a beech tree has me thirsty, think I will have a beer and go watch bare beach bears play bare bear beech basketball from a beech tree.

When you've said budwiser you've said it all!

"Bear" in mind, farmers feed the world and breweries too. God knows, if we expected tea sippin' (picture them with cup in hand, pinky pointed straight out) whine and cheese UNC alumni to produce barley and hops and all that for breweries this would be a much poorer and sadder world. I daresay it might be "barren".

Back to the subject, any other sightings of bear in Stokesdale?

Sandra,
Maybe the topic could be expanded to cover any wild animal reports. With the many reports of rabid animals we could post those reports here.

Shame on you Steve-O. I'm trying to get people back on topic here.

I think James has a good idea. Why don't we expand this to include other types of possibly dangerous wildlife.

:shock::shock: An employee at Gas Town has a photo of the "treed" bear.  It was seen in Rockingham Cty, not far from Stokesdale. Also, last week a mountain lion was seen on Oak Level Church Rd crossing over the small section of lake where the locals fish.

Yes, residents were worried about that mountain lion.  Many animals in my subdivison were killed or seriously injured by it.  See if Tweety Bird can give you more info on the mountain lion.  I believe someone Tweety knows saw the lion.  Also mean to comment on the tree removal for the new Dollar General by the Bi-Rite.  I am sure lots of animals had to leave this area.  There was thick growth on that corner.  Wonder where the poor birds, etc., have run off to?

great report!

It was spotted going across the  road on Oak Level Church Road. near Belews Lake according to Sylvester, Tweety's husband. That was yesterday. I do know he saw it because he came home all excited. He gets confused as to the names of the roads.  Since we once lived in Texas and had the opportunity to see "cats" on the loose, I am sure he knows what he saw. Not like me who once had my grandfather load his rifle in Pennsylvania when I swore I saw a deer in the next yard. Turned out to be a goat that had broken out of his pen! So I have never been invited to hunt with anyone!

Wildlife of a different sort required my attention today, but I am curious about:

Bear watching certainly takes a lot of infinitesimal fortitude.

Does that mean "fortitude" occurs continously in magnitude by very, very small increments?

I understand the Cat was about the size of a labrador and golden in color. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND THE NC DEPT. of wildlife has the Eastern Cougar listed as endangered. Some sightings are attributed to pets being turned loose by irresponsible exotic animal owners. These animals can live in areas where white tailed deer are plentiful. they subdue their prey and often drag it to thickets where they cover it in leaves and brush to return to it later to feed. They are usally seen in twilight hours. They tend to shy away from man, but will attack when cornered.

I know him as Rebel.  He introduced himself as such.  Glad you have lots of time on your

hands to check out all the facts on these  many different blogs.  Thanks.  You do seem to

know it all.

By the way,  we knew the owner of one of these animals that was  attacked.  The NWO had an article and photo concerning this attack.

WXII 12 news had some coverage on this cat, too.  They had actual footage showing the cat.  They spoke to people who sighted it.

Mrsnose,
Can you remember the dates of the first sighting? The Eastern Cougar is said to have a range of 10 to  500 miles, possible the 2nd cat is actually the  same cat. Thanks for the report!

No, I can't remember the date.  Maybe Sandra can get you the NWO article.  I know the newscast was just a bit after the report in the NWO.

I remember hearing about sightings of a bobcat or something a couple of years ago. Is that what you mean?

Jim Flynt,

I don't know how to "reply to you privately."  Apparently, you misinterpeted my post.  You missed the most important word -"thanks".  I meant that "you seem to be knowledgeable."  I'm sure that people on these blogs appreciate all the info you provide and the time you take to research this info.  You do not have to apologize.  Have a nice day.  :)

I remember a story maybe a year ago about some dogs getting mauled by something like a big cat of some kind. I don't remember if they ever figgered out what it was.

Pappy
That is the story. Pictures appeared to be that of a cat of the garden variety Cougar. A bobcat is much smaller and has a very short tail, hence the name bobcat. As I understand from articles
the tracks of canines and felines are similar in nature feline tracks have no claws.

According to the NWO archives, the mountain lion/big cat story actually goes back to summer of 2002. I hadn't heard anything more about seeing such a creature until it popped up on this forum. Several pets were attacked back then, and a local TV news crew did catch it on TV.

You guys keep your eyes open and be careful when you're out walking your dogs! Keep us posted.

Pappy, I also thought it was only two years ago. But I do remember Talking to Animal Control and they saying that there was nothing to it. When I asked about the Waii report he just shrugged and said they (AC) had no proof). Doubt they would know a cougar if it snuk up and bit them on the .....!;)

Nobocy is going to be lucky enough to be eaten by a cougar in this area. Just think forever and ever your name would be remember as the only person in modern history in NW Guilford county to be eaten by a cougar. How is that for a legacy?

New a guy once whose grandfather was the first person in Tenn run over by a car.

Pappy still ain't seen nary bear. But, did y'all hear about that 4 foot long python that attacked the baby in Charlotte? Some feller came to the rescue an' got the young'un loose by beatin' the snake with a shovel or somethin'. The baby's OK, the mama won't get over it any time soon.

Now, the weird part o' the story comes when they take the snake to a pet store to get him off the streets an' the pet store feller says the poor snake is harmless an' why would anybody beat a harmless creature like that?

Huh?!

First of all, no snake should be 4 feet long. Second, IT WAS TRYING TO EAT A BABY! Third, there doesn't need to be a third!

How ironic Jane, my granddaddy was the first person in his community in Siever County Tenn. to have a car.

We had our own animal event Today with a stray dog keeping us away from our cars.
Have to commend animal control, they got here within 30 minutes to takr the critter to doggie Jail. poor dog didnot appear too have been taken care of . It had a collar but no tag. Hope they find its owner Wasn a dog we knew from the hood. good morning all!

BIG CAT ALERT

Talked to a resident of Boone's Landing earlier this evening who was telling me that some time late into Tuesday Night early Wed morning. tracks were left across his drive, tracks were about 4 inches wide and were those of a large cat(no not a house cat). very similar to plaster cast he made of the cat during the last sighting in 2002.
Lets all be alert and report any further sitings.

James that is ironic. Did you Grand daddy run over anybody?

I reread that post and relize how bad my spelling is early in the morning. It is bad the rest of the day also but I usually realize it.

Jane,
he never ran over any body that I know of. He was born in 1881 and was married during WWI and took men to Knoxville to enlist as he was the only one with a car.
He was also a constable and store keeper untill about 1924 when when they all moved to Atlanta to work at The Federal Prison. He could tell some stories.

That's incredible, James. I'd be interested to hear more about this.

I'm also curious about the plaster casts of paw prints. Does this person have expertise in tracking and/or identifying animals?

Sandra Maybe Yeti has come to Northwest Guilford county!!!!! If we have bears there is no reason to think we won't have cougars. I have heard a bobcat a couple of times at my house. I called the science center and they said they are spotted occasionaly around the lakes. Saw a cougar once at Powder Horn mountain. That was pretty cool although it was just a glimpse.
