Let's create a group comprised of concerned citizens whose idea of progress is to never do anything, avoid paying taxes at all costs, let our children grow up with no park or recreational facilities and treat anyone who disagrees with them like dirt. The groups’ characteristics would be to act obnoxious, insecure, be distrustful of everyone or everything and have people think rudeness and belligerence are our town charter. The group could be lead by two very average people who think they are better than everyone else and have nothing better to do than stir up trouble at all times.

Come to think of it, I bet certain foreign countries could use a group like that. I wonder if the CC’s would be interested in moving to Iraq, Iran or North Korea.

Duane, I bet it’s killing you not knowing who this is!

We all need to be careful to not confuse "Concerned Citizens" with concerned citizens in Summerfield or ANY community. One group was/is a political nom de guerre while the other are any individuals or small groups of individuals who may have one or more serious or specific concerns about a community.

Some citizens have environmentalism as their major concern while others wholly embrace growth with no concern for the environment. Neither position is undemocratic nor un-American but rather the personal belief system of the individual as they see the role of government. Holding one position does not make anyone better than or superior to the individual holding the polar opposite position.

Some individuals or groups may endorse and support parks and recreations while other individuals and groups may believe that such services should be the domain of the private sector and 'users' rather than of government. Again, neither position is undemocratic or un-American but rather the personal belief system of the individual as they see the role of government.

What is happening and has happened in Summerfield is that both sides have lost sight of governing from the center, and in their haste to poison and paint the opposition as mad, have continued to move their own respective positions more and more away from the middle, where the larger population no doubt rests politically and philosophically.

And one day in the near future, from outside the 'Concerned Citizens' or the established status quo, it will be another political individual or individuals who will be elected and come to power in Summerfield by representing a 'majority' of Summerfield residents (those in the political middle) by adopting and maintaining the political message of a Third Way. Whatever serious 'concerns' by voters which previously elected two 'Concerned Citizen' candidates to power, will continue to be serious 'concerns' to that silent majority of citizens until those 'concerns' have been addressed and ameliorated to the comfort of the previous majority of voters.

The shortsightedness of both sides in not finding and sharing the middle has and will continue to deeply divide the people of Summerfield until the people take back control of Summerfield politics and their government from both extremes.

Jim, can we hope that both sides will find a way to move toward that larger population and find a way of working together?  There's truth in what you posted. except that it was not done in haste, but through erosion.

(I, too, like the word "ameliorated" ):)
