OK.. the weather forecast is calling for snow & freezing rain... & AGAIN Grier has not even delayed school when Forsythe County has called off school... what is up with that? Exam week... they had to postpone exams the day they had the winter weather because parents were either not sending their kids or checked their kids out early... My daughter's bus was 45 minutes late & slid around several times en route. Is he waiting for someone to get hurt? I just don't understand.... |

Where ya been DT???? Glad you're back! I just woke up and noticed that they've cancelled Guilford County Schools finally....... I guess they just wanted to wait until we were all in bed so that everyone would have to get up in the morning..... Couldn't announce it at 11..... So, since I got up and checked for ya'll, DON'T WAKE UP! School's cancelled!!!!!! |

well, our decision is multi-fold... hubby has been laid off & injured since Aug... & I never have found a "perm-full-time" techie job so money is the main driving force... then too our family is in SC... so back we go! I'll still keep in touch... a part of Stokesdale will always be in my heart! |

Not sure what age she is, but I think it was high school. That can sometimes be tough. Maybe she's excited to be heading back to family though.... Be sure to check in on us from time to time! |

It is a no win situation with school and the weather, it wouldn't matter if Grier was the most revered person in the world. If they delay/cancel school and the weather doesn't show up they get lambasted. If they don't cancel/delay and the weather does show up they get lambasted. While the day isn't over yet, it looks like the weather at 11:17 isn't as bad as predicted. |

rasin -- You're right, no-win situation, but everyone had to go with the calls they made... It isn't worth being wrong when you consider the consequences of that.... It's getting ready to change over to sleet and freezing rain now.... Do we want buses and teenage drivers out in that? |

I agree they should err on the side of safety but I also sympathize with them being a bit gun-shy at times because if they get it wrong and cancel school the parents that work or have other obligations will give them a roasting. Given how young NC drivers can be I’d prefer most of them be off the roads even in good weather |

Are NC drivers younger than drivers in other states? |

Where I grew up you didn't get a learner's permit until 17 unless you took drivers ed and then you could get it at 16.5 and take the test when you became 17. You could get your permit at 17 and take the test right away if you wanted to. Given how I remember the misfiring synapses when I was 15-16 I cringe at the mental processes going on when kids are driving at that age. Though now I am just glad to have some synapses that fire at all… |

Steve Adkins wrote: Don't forget the internet works in SC too DT, don't be a stranger I don't mean to sound like ol' Arnold, but "I'll be back!" I'm in SC now and tuned in... my daughter & husband are still there until the house closes... she does have school obstacles though... where NW is on traditional & the new school is on block, she will be loosing 2 classes! Also, with the stipulation down here that she have 11 credits, unless she gets an online or summer course, she will be considered a sophmore again next year until she gets the required credits to be considered otherwise! But... to stay on topic... with one flake of snow down here, they at least will delay school for two hours. Then they can tell how the weather will pan out & will make decisions accordingly.... I'm all for safety... I'd hate to see one of our kids get into a wreck or a bus flip because of an icy road! |

I'll tell you what -- making the decision on whether to have school, delay it one or two hours or have school at all is a job I wouldn't want. Unless there was a blizzard or no power all over the county, I'll bet there is somebody who is mad about the decision. This is so touchy because people's lives are in your hands. |

isnt that one reason we should err on the side of caution? |

DToney wrote: isnt that one reason we should err on the side of caution? DT, as Sandra commented above, this is a no-win situation. I'm a Yankee from Chicago, where the schools didn't shut down until the vehicles couldn't move. They don't shut down schools because of what "might" happen, they wait until it "does" happen, and happens with a vengeance. 2 hour delays were more prevalent than closings. My wife is from TN, she thinks more along your lines. Some interesting discussions in our house on this subject. There are many northerners like myself invading the south, I would surmise some are winding up in decision making positions on school closings. Last Thurs, I drove my kid to Guilford College, to see for myself the road conditions, and because I didn't want another smashed up car due to black ice. Roads were wet but very passable. Also found out the dean who makes "closing" decisions at GC was from Iowa (hence my above comments). Like I said.............no win. |

I would like to point out to the Northerners (as myself... from RI) that we in the south are not as prepared for winter weather as folks in the northern states.... 1. it is not prudent to buy lots of winter weather gear ( ie.. snowplows, snow blowers, snow tires... etc.. ) when it don't snow that much.... 2. Black ice is worse than snow... it don't grab! Because it does not snow as frequently nor as deep down in the southern states... we also don't have the driving experience that the northerners do either... more reasons to stay at home for a day or delay for a couple of hours until our warm southern sun comes out and melts the black ice.... and our children do not have to be on school busses driven by folks that also do not have much experience driving in winter weather! |
