Given how young NC drivers can be I’d prefer most of them be off the roads even in good weather :)

I don't mean to sound like ol' Arnold, but "I'll be back!"  I'm in SC now and tuned in... my daughter & husband are still there until the house closes... she does have school obstacles though... where NW is on traditional & the new school is on block, she will be loosing 2 classes!  Also, with the stipulation down here that she have 11 credits, unless she gets an online or summer course, she will be considered a sophmore again next year until she gets the required credits to be considered otherwise!

But... to stay on topic... with one flake of snow down here, they at least will delay school for two hours.  Then they can tell how the weather will pan out & will make decisions accordingly.... I'm all for safety... I'd hate to see one of our kids get into a wreck or a bus flip because of an icy road!

I'll tell you what -- making the decision on whether to have school, delay it one or two hours or have school at all is a job I wouldn't want. Unless there was a blizzard or no power all over the county, I'll bet there is somebody who is mad about the decision. This is so touchy because people's lives are in your hands.

isnt that one reason we should err on the side of caution?  :?

DT, as Sandra commented above, this is a no-win situation.

I'm a Yankee from Chicago, where the schools didn't shut down until the vehicles couldn't move.  They don't shut down schools because of what "might" happen, they wait until it "does" happen, and happens with a vengeance. 2 hour delays were more prevalent than closings.    My wife is from TN, she thinks more along your lines.  Some interesting discussions in our house on this subject.

There are many northerners like myself invading the south, I would surmise some are winding up in decision making positions on school closings.

Last Thurs, I drove my kid to Guilford College, to see for myself the road conditions, and because I didn't want another smashed up car due to black ice.  Roads were wet but very passable.  Also found out the dean who makes "closing" decisions at GC was from Iowa (hence my above comments).

Like I said.............no win.

I would like to point out to the Northerners (as myself... from RI) that we in the south are not as prepared for winter weather as folks in the northern states....

1.  it is not prudent to buy lots of winter weather gear ( ie.. snowplows, snow blowers, snow tires... etc.. ) when it don't snow that much....

2.  Black ice is worse than snow... it don't grab!  ;)

Because it does not snow as frequently nor as deep down in the southern states... we also don't have the driving experience that the northerners do either... more reasons to stay at home for a day or delay for a couple of hours until our warm southern sun comes out and melts the black ice.... and our children do not have to be on school busses driven by folks that also do not have much experience driving in winter weather!
