News stations are reporting Saddam Hussein has been executed. How do you feel about this? What do you think this means, and do you fear his supporters may seek retribution against America?

Saddam was a symbol for unfettered cruelty.  The world is better off without him.   too Bad they couldn't find Osama bin Laden and get a 2 for 1 deal on the hangings.

Yes, as surreal as it seems, he still had supporters, but so do all the fanatical leaders.   They will probably create all sorts of noisy protests against the Americans, and make many far fetched demands, but doubt they will get very far.

Saddam's execution is like water in Summerfield -- should've happened a long time ago.;)

This could tie in with the topic on Pat Robertson. Think Pat's prediction of mass killings in the U.S. in 2007 could have had anything to do with Saddam's execution?

The thing that is scary to me is that Saddam did and does have followers. All it takes is a couple of fanatics -- just look at Timothy McVey and the Oklahoma City bombings.

What's that? Are you thinking maybe we should turn Pat Robertson over to the Iraqi's to be tried and....er, possibly executed? ;)

Heck, just give Pat Robertson enough rope and he will hang himself.

From The New York Times January 6, 2007

"No one will ever forget the way in which Saddam was executed. They turned him into a martyr."
President Hosni Mubarek of Egypt.

Surely this was not the desired reaction to the execution?  Hate to think we were outsmarted again.

As Harry Truman used to say: "The Buck Stops Here" (at the President's desk).

So, given the current COC of the US, why should any of us be surprised at all of these continuing pitiable pathetic outcomes in Iraq?

It is well past time to bring our troops home from what is now nothing more than an Iraqi sectarian civil war which WE started.

By way of Edit, I would also add, the United States never should have invaded Iraq, and most especially for the weak and knowingly mendacious reasons which Bush-Cheney-Rumsfield used as their rationalization for war.

I am not about to get into whether or not we should have invaded Iraq. -It's a can of worms. However, anyone can be made into a martyr. Some people even considered Hitler a martyr. - some still do.

I hate to be disgusting, but did everyone hear about what happened when they tried to hang Hussein's half-brother? They said it was because they had the rope too long....

The long and short of it is that his brother was decapitated. No more 'heads you win, tails you lose' for him.
