I believe I heard that we are getting cameras in the High School. It's about time. We have been struggling for years to get cameras and now I believe it is possible. So there I said it......NW is still dealing with thefts and this may help us. Hopefully, I guess, if we can help our children by doing what we as parents need to do. Lets tell them that if they take their electronic instruments to school they must take the risk that they may be lost of stolen, and if they are we must support the school's standing stating that bringing Ipods, and other electronic toys to school is PROHIBITED... I should say at your own risk......that should be the end of it. I have sat and heard parents yelling about their child's stolen product when the product should not be at school in the first place. What can I say. That's what I tell mine. Dont take them. but if you do and they are stolen, dont cry to me. Just buy you another one if its that important. I dont buy it myself......they lost it. I agree gottobe -- if kids shouldn't bring something to school, they should know they're doing it at their own risk. I think the cameras are a great idea. As I understand it, they still need to raise quite a bit of money. The three local towns were going to pay for the camera system, but then found out it wasn't legal to do so. Now the Oak Ridge Community Center, who puts on the Oak Ridge Horse Show, has donated $10,000 -- which is wonderful and this group should definitely be commended. Mr. Kidd had told me the system would cost at least $37,000, so they still need about $27,000. I'd love to see some local builders, developers and real estate agents get involved. I think this would certainly be a worthy project for them because they profit from NWHS being a good school as much as anyone. If one group would take the lead and then challenge others, the money coud probably be raised pretty quickly. |

Great idea, Sandra! And we've all heard how folks who are considering this part of the state look at school web sites to help determine where they will move. I think Northwest's high scores and good ranking have brought lots of business to local builders through the years. |

"The three local towns were going to pay for the camera system, but then found out it wasn't legal to do so." Can the money be donated to the PTSA and then transferred to the school? I dont see what the big deal is about giving money to the school to purchase a much needed system. There has to be a loop hole somewhere. Money comes and goes around here like fast moving streams...... Gotobeme |

The Town of Stokesdale has given money to the elementary school on several occasions, was it legal or not ? If it was do they have to pay it back? |

Cameras sound like a good idea, but I believe they will be of no value unless the NWHS administrators are willing to establish meaningful consequences. In my experience, during the time I was teaching at NWHS, there simply were no meaningful consequences for students who violated the rules. Students who were consistently disruptive and disrespectful faced no meaningful consequences. They laughed in the face of “whatever” consequences the principal and her assistants were willing to convey, which wasn’t much. Not once, even for more serious offenses, did I see the administration provide support for a teacher with a complaint against a student, not once. The administrators just wanted to be popular, with students and with parents. Maybe it has changed since I was there, but I doubt it. I have nothing but admiration for the many teachers at NWHS who are competent and conscientious and dedicated. But I have serious doubts about NWHS being a viable learning environment. NWHS may be the “best” school in this area, but that’s not saying much. |

I haven't heard about the ways that they're using the cameras, but if they actually enforce the use of them and the punishment of students caught, the camera system is a good thing. My first reaction was, "Why do we need cameras? They're taking away our already-diminished rights in school!" However, I now agree that a surveillance system is good for the school. Even if it is only used for catching students who committed illegal actions or proving one's guilt, that is better than nothing. Since I don't do anything illegal, I have no reason to worry about the cameras and usually don't notice that they're there. General student response about the surveillance system? I'm not sure, but I know that the people who smoke in the bathrooms and out behind the buildings are probably upset. |
