It is my understanding from someone who attended last night's Stokesdale Town Council meeting that town council member Fred Berry has resigned due to a forthcoming move from Stokesdale over to Rockingham County. This will of course, result in another vacancy on the Town Council, which will be filled by appointment by the Town Council to fill out the remainder of this council seat's term. Seems like more folks are being appointed over here than are being elected by the public. Fred's departure is a tremendous loss for the Town of Stokesdale as he clearly has more municipal knowledge and experience than any of the other members of Town Council perhaps save for our long serving Mayor, Randy Jones. You're right Jim -- Fred did resign and January will be his last meeting as part of the council. The council appointed Powell Shelton to fulfill the rest of Fred's term (Feb. - Nov.) How do you Stokesdale residents feel? |

Could've been an opportunity to give some newbie a chance to get their feet wet to see if they wanted to run in November, but I guess that could be viewed as playin' favorites..... I think Mr. Shelton has served before, right? So at least he knows what's going on.... |

Yes, Mr. Shelton served for many years on the council (probably at least a dozen years). I believe he may have been one of the early mayors of the town. He decided not to run in the last election. |

Sandra is correct that Powell Shelton previously served on the Stokesdale Town Council, and was one of the five originial councilmen who were appointed by the NC State Legislature when Stokesdale was first issued it's town charter. He served continuously from that time until 3 years ago when he decided not to run for relection. The first Mayor was Jesse Joyce who was then succeeded by Randy Jones, who serves now. |

I do not know about the legality, etc about being "appointed" I am currently happy with our TC but have not had a dog in any of the fights. It does seem, however, that our TC gets along fairly well and seems to work well together. ah hem.. unlike "other" towns' |

Doesn't that create the perception that town council is merely a rubber stamp without dialogue, diversity and debate? |

Could be.. but I am currently happy with the decisions they have made. I have not been adversely affected by them- or wasn't aware of it- oops. |
