Phase I has been completed, now it's time to put the wheels in motion toward completion of Phase II.

A meeting was held on 4 November at the Summerfield Elementary School to solicit community input.   This input is a required step in the process to write a grant request.

Many good ideas were discussed, including exercise/walking/nature trails, fishing areas, recreation areas, additional childrens play areas & restroom facilities, etc.

Do you support moving forward on Phase II?   Why or Why Not?

Pappy does support moving forward with Phase II of our Summerfield Community Park and I know for a calcified fact that I'm not alone on that trail.

How do I know?

From the results of the parks and recreation needs assesment survey published in March 2006, Dr. Jim Sellers of UNC-G was able to reach some conclusions and make some recommendations for Summerfield's future needs. The survey responses led this expert to include this sentence among his recommendations:

"Areas and facilities recommended for future development in this park include walking trails, nature trails, bike paths, a quiet open space area, and an outdoor community event area with an amphitheater."

Some people, who claim to be the voice o' the people (hereinafter referred to as The Voice), say the people don't want parks and/or a amphitheater. Well, we've already heard the real voice o' the people an' it said YES! we want a park with an amphitheater.

Hee hee! Pappy thinks The Voice needs some Ears!

Some people want to frame the park question in terms of "needs" vs. "wants". I assume this is so we can "logically" reach the conclusion that a dumb ol' park is just a "want" an' therefore somethin' we can do without.

By that logic eyesight might be considered merely a "want" since many visually impaired people can function well without the benefits of eyesight.

Pappy thinks we reach a more meaningful evaluation if we look at it in terms of value to the community. Will a park with an amphitheatre (etc.) provide greater value to the community than the cost its installation an' maintenance will incur?

Yes! Immeasurably more!

When foresight is what we need, willful blindness is what they offer.

(It's baaack! Pappy cheated an' copied this from the previous park forum. )

I am excited about Phase II of the park.  I want to see an amphitheatre.  I think it would be a great place for the community to come together.  In different cities I have lived and visited there have been many different types from the type that had seating for everyone to just have a raised area for the concert or movie to be shown and the people sat in lawn chairs.  I loved getting out and meeting people.  When I was new to the area it was a great way to learn about your community.  I can't to hang out at the amphitheatre.

Music to my ears, Mr Jim. The 1812 Overture is appropriate because it commemorates Napolean's unsuccessful invasion o' Russia. Hee hee! The little feller thought he could take over the world but the peasants whupped him. Tore up the town doin' it though.

Wonder who among the participants didn't vote in favor of an amphitheater?

Hmmmmmmm, 34 out of 37 votes, now that leaves 3 who didn't vote for an ampitheater.

I seem to recall Crawford, Dunham, and Strickland being at that meeting.   But since I didn't watch who put the votes on each sheet, I can't be sure who voted for what.

Now, if I remember right, 2 of the 3 are CC's, and Crawford seems to be AC/DC whether he's a CC.   And the CC's say "the whole town doesn't want an ampitheater", but 34/37 (92%)  of an interested sample from the town seems to be saying the opposite.

Aw, maybe the 2/3 CC, and the 1/3 AC/DC/CC used double votes on the fishing pier, so they'd have another area to fish for foolishness.   Just can't tell about these things.

Important meeting tomorrow 12/14/06 Thursday 7 PM at Community building. The Phase 2 of the park will be presented to council. We need supportfor this. Understand there maybe  small but vocal oposition and that there has been one of those infamous mailings done this week.  I hope the Park supports will load the Community Center. Tell everybody.  We only have a few more weeks until the grant has to be done or we will sit around for another year with no matching funding.

Jane is correct.

We need folks to show up en masse, and sign up to speak favorably for the park.  We want a vocal majority to out number and out speak the vocal minority.  We want the positive speakers to wear out SMSandra's keyboard, and wear off her fingerprints with positive comments.

Let the council know you support the park, want to see it completed, and (gasp) are delighted for your tax dollars to support it.  Don't be shy......SPEAK OUT !!!!!!!!!

Ok its down to the wire. Tuesday night the park phase 2 will be presented to the council. They will have to approve it that night in order to get the grant finished so it can be sent on 12/31/07. Its a good plan. Not everything off the wishlist but it connects trails, makes picnic spots  and will give the Town a place to gather. Come Tuesday night and voice your support of the plan. Let your council know this is important.

Jane, I think you mean so the grant application can be sent by 1/31/07.

For anyone who doesn't know, the town council meets on Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Summerfield Community Center (on Centerfield Road, behind Summerfield Elementary's gym).

They also have the forms available online at the SF town website for ordering the personalized bricks.

If you haven't ordered one, please do so.  Last I heard we were pretty close to hitting the 100 mark!  I'm anxious to see our "forum brick" so we gotta hit 100!!!!

Crackah, how 'CLOSE' is 'close'?

BTW, I thought 'close' only counted in hand grenades, horseshoes and slow dancin'!

I'm glad y'all clarified that!!! I was getting worried about Stokesdale EVER getting an application in if Summerfield had done all it had to meet a 12/31/07 deadline and Stokesdale hadn't done anything yet.... I was wondering what deadline Stokesdale leaders might be aiming for!!!:shock::shock:

Not sure exactly how close Jim.  They told me at the last TC meeting, but I forgot.  There were also several people there who said they wanted to buy one for Christmas presents so hopefully the number increased over the holidays!

I'll try to check on the exact number.  And I'd say close certainly counts if we have 5 or 6 procrastinators (like me) out there who were intending to buy a brick anyway!!! ;)

Article in the N @ R today says there are 60 bricks ordered so still 40 to go. I guess we will have to wait on those prograstinators to get around to ordering.  Maybe instead of awards in Summerfield we could start giving bricks.

Jane, I read that in the Guilford Record too, but I am almost positive that Ms. Joseph told me before Christmas, that a higher number than that had already been ordered and I know of at least 2 that were ordered for holiday gifts.  I could be wrong though.

The updated Master plan was approved tonight. As was the Partf grant process so the grant will go in on January 31. Dwayne got nit picky over wording of the grant.  I sat there thinking  we have paid PCOG $12,000 to write this grant  because they have the expertise. I guess if we don't get the grant then we can blame Dwayne for changing the words, which I suppose he would be happy about since our two newest council members voted against the updated master plan and applying for the grant.

I hope you're some place warmer, Steve. I b'lieve the vote was 3-2 on them items, but I could be wrong.

Becky tried hard to get the price o' the amphitheater up from $250,000 by addin' the bathroom an' playground in with the amphitheater cost. Her little shoppin' spree got it up to over $300,000. But it took a master like Mom to show her young'un how it was done. She went ahead an' bumped the price on up to $1 million in one master stroke. If Mayor Brown hadn't called time on her, I reckon we might have had a $100 million NASCAR track with Shamu the Killer Whale a-jumpin' out yonder in the pond.

3-2

Crawford was arguing semantics (again) because the term "heavily used" was on the grant application.  He wants to "watch and wait" to see if the park continues to get the use that it has gotten since the opening and doesn't want to say that the park is heavily used.  He says that he gets calls from people stating that the park is not being used.

Strickland went off on maintenance costs and stated that the people of Summerfield (The same people who she thinks aren't smart enough to understand her reasoning on other issues) did not understand that there would be maintenance and upkeep costs involved if Phase II was approved.  Michael Brandt corrected her and said that it wasn't fair that she made the assumption that people don't understand.  He said something to the effect that if people choose to have the town make improvements then the people, as a general rule, understand that there will be additional upkeep costs incurred.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, last night was my first foray into a Summerfield Town Council meeting, and I just wanted to say Thank-You for (1) letting me attend and (2) for tipping me off over the course of the past few months in advance about 'Mom' and the two CC members. You were all pretty much right on target in your assessments and descriptions of both.

I must say that I was able to pick Mom out of the crowd before she ever sat down right before the beginning of the meeting, based on the descriptions you good and kind folks from Summerfield had shared here.

When she did speak on the Armfield matter, your previous stereotypes were completely correct as well.

Does anybody besides me wonder where all the support that the cc's claim to have is when these votes come up. I guess they are too dumb to understand the concepts also.

I find the constant references to the people in Summerfield not understanding to be so demeaning. Even Dwayne said something last night about the people not understanding.  I think the people understand perfectly well that they live in a wonderful area of North Carolina with extemely low taxes and 3 council members who have a vision for trying to make this a better place for us all and future generations.

I do not understand why Robin ( bless her heart because what would the town do) stays. She is treated much like the massah in the big house use to treat the field hands. Robin has proven herself to be a very capable professional member of staff and to have people talk to her the way Mom and the two chicks do is just a further example of how far we have gone away from   southern civility in today's society. Very sad!

I just got a chance to read my NWO. I think Patti"s editoral on central Park in New York is such an important lesson. I know the Guilford Battleground thought they had a huge park years ago when it was developed and now they are buying up the land contiguous to the park as it becomes available because the park is too small for the amount of use it is getting. People in New York had a vision when they developed Central Park and I am sure they had their fair share of nattering nabobs of negativity but the visionaries plugged on. Jan McLean's review of Dr. Sellars survey was very enlightening.  Please those of you on Town Council with the vision plug on for us and our future generations.

Hey Jim welcome to Summerfield's version of politics. 3 to 2 almost all the time. Also, almost every meeting a rude speaker from the crowd speaking out of order. Then someone rambling on a subject leading nowhere. Another 3 to 2 vote, then a rude comment to and about the good citizens of Summerfield, a closed session, and meeting adjourned. Next meeting you attend, look for me .

It was brought to my attention this philanthropist looks for unique items that apply to children.  It might be worth our while to apply for a grant to fund part of the ampitheatre?????    what's the worst he can say..........No ????

Whew--Bama 80 what's up? You've got me all confused. But that's besides the point.

I just wanted to say thanks to all the commited volunteers and town members who have given us a park to take our children to . I found it very refreshing to get outside the other evening and take time with my daughter just watching her master her new world. As our community grows I would love to see the park grow as well. I also enjoyed noticing people enjoying their casual walk or ride around the lake--especially the children.

After visiting tournament downtown, and getting caught up in the web of drunken, twenty your olds, I feel so comfortable taking my children to the scenic park,  not exposing them to bullying attitudes and foul mouths from adolescent adults who do not even take into consideration who is around and whom they my be offending. Naturally, I can avoid such places and for the most part I do. But I cannot hide under a rock and say that such behavior does not take place. Summerfield residents are not angels and are not perfect, but at least I have not experienced any of this in the park.

Summerfield--is a breath of fresh air--lets proceed to do more delightful things to the park. Your are only making it a better place.

and by the way--I plan on visiting the park sometime again today and tomorrow and as much as I possibly can.

Thanks

Also, George sent out some photos and someone forwarded them to me.  They were taken on the first day of Spring at the park and show a full parking lot and a full playground! Thanks George!  Keep sending those photos and I'll post them!

GREAT IDEA, Grits ...as you said, it's too late for this year, but let's put it on our calendar for next February so we can all start planning and publicizing it in the weeks leading up to Easter. I've made a note of it for 2008 ...

Why wait till next year? What about some kind of activity there in conjunction with Founder's Day? Scavenger hunt or something?

That would be fun! We could have clues scattered around to lead to the next object/clue.

I like the Easter egg hunt ideer too.

The Summerfield Fire Station has an Easter egg hunt for kids each year.  I saw lots of children there on April 1, so I think it might have been held then. Still would be fun to have one in the park - there's no such thing as too many jellybeans! (or eggs)

Park Report:

Yesterday Afternoon shortly after 4 pm there were 13 people and one dog using the park.

Today at the same time, there were 8 people using the park.

(I keep forgetting to do this, so if you do a ride by, note the time and number of people and post it or call someone who can!)

News sure does travel fast --- somebody just called me here at work and gave me that great news as well.

Wednesday evening My husband and I were coming home from High Point and noticed a enormous rainbow arching over Bel Air. I made a comment that the rainbow was bowing in the direction toward the Friddle Property, "Well, look a there, there's that pot of gold sitting in our ballfields."

Today is a wonderful day

I think we got this grant because of the hard work of Michael, George, Debbie, Sue, Mark, Dana and all the rest of us volunteers but they get recognition for not giving up. They also made sure that the PartF people got what they needed, when they needed it and in the right form.  Kathy White remarked at one point on what a real pleasure it had been for her working with our Town on the first phase. No reason to believe the second phase won't go just as well.

I can't wait for the phase 2 to start.

I had a chance to run by the park this morning and see the new brick walkway and it looks marvelous.

Congratulations to all of you on a job well done plus on the good news of receiving the grant.

no eye deer is an old hee haw joke.

Well, not saying hee haw invented it.. but thats where I heard it. I used to watch hee haw with my granddad but technically I am not "old enough" to be a person that would have watched hee haw.

bama80,

Admitting that you watched Hee Haw says a lot about your age.  That's better than admitting that you got the "no eye deer" thing from watching your Hee Haw DVD collection!!!!!!!:D

I know you guys must be talking about watching Hee Haw in the park, right? Otherwise, I'd have to pull out my "off topic" sign (where is that little bugger anyway?)

We might have another Grant to apply for. I heard something about getting some plants for the park during conversation Monday night at the Grasshopper's game. Sounds like a good idea.

New plants sound wonderful, Summerfield needs lots of color. We also need to form beautification clubs, garden clubs, and Summerfield Beautiful to bring color and life to the town. The garden clubs could be responsible for planting annuals or perineals all over the town, not just the park. A group could be responsible for a welcoming entrance to the town (like Oak Ridge), another for the ball park, another for Town Hall, and etc.

Any takers?

I think I saw some forms under the History tent at Founders' Day from the Summerfield Garden Club. I think they were trying to recruit some new members. This might be a good way/time to bring some new folks in!!:D

I don't know Pappy, but I heard today that George was standin' at the startin' line waiting for the startin' gun to go off!

I sure hope he's wearin' his kevlar track clothes.....That startin' gun might not be the only shot he has to take before the race is over.....

Nothing is going on yet I don't think. Mostly last night Michael gave an update on the ballfield purchase which is probably another 60 days off.

The survey has to be done for one thing. There were several other legal things like title search. It is not unusual for there to be a lag time to make sure that everything is legal and correct when you purchase property.

Thank you David Layton for the wonderful letter in NWO on how much you and 750 students have enjoyed the Summerfield Community Park. I think it was everybody involved in the projects dream that the park would become an intregal part of the school curriculum. Thank you for making that dream come true.

Not sure if this is in phase one or two, but two of the scouts of Troop 103 are doing Eagle projects in the park soon. My son is cleaning on of the trails and making natural benches, and another is planning an orienteering course.  Hopefully more scouts of our troop and others will come forward and improve the park to earn their Eagle badge.

dmauser I had the pleasure of meeting your son and was most impressed with him.

I would like to thank him and the other scouts that chose to stepped forward and express their town pride by selecting our community park for their Eagle Scout projects. What wonderful citizens. Good luck to him! :D
