Call it "water cooler chat" but I ran up on a conversation at work where some ladies stated "we should just let them alone and they should leave us alone and then we can all just be happy" and they were wondering why Bush did not sit down with the N. Korean leader and "talk" about our differences!

My comment was "it ain't gonna happen!"  It was very hard for them to understand that concept.

I'd like to ask my forum buddies to "chime in" and tell your thoughts in the matter... I also broadened the topic to include other "gangsta" countries... if you'd like to bring others in on the list of those who would like to have their way with us.  :(

Interesting you have some co-workers who think apple pie & motherhood is the approach to take with defiant countries that hate the USA's guts.

As far as Bush & what'shisname sitting down..........it's the same reason the Fox doesn't sit down with the hens, or the Lions didn't sit down with the Christians.   Might have made a good photo opportunity, but neither side would have compromise in their vocabulary.

So what do you think we should do, DT, if reasoning with these "gangsta" countries won't work?

their narrowmindedness... and the fact they don't want to change... they want US to change because they feel we are in the wrong.

Two von Clausewitz quotes come to mind:

Nations always act in their own (national) self interest.

War is always a 'rational choice' which occurs when there is a breakdown in trade or diplomacy.

Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz (Prussian general and influential military  theorist. He is most famous for his military treatise Vom Kriege.)

I think we need to do more than "try".

I'd start by complimenting Kim Jung Il on his hair an' go from there.

How's this for diplomacy... we could send some people over there to teach their armies how to bend their legs when they march.  Whenever I see them lined up and marching, I just turn the sound off and hum the music to "Dance of the Sugarplum Faries."   It's good for a quick chuckle.  Of course I'm easily amused.

Lets remember that the north korean leader is a nutcase. For instance every time he plays golf he "always" gets at least one hole in one according to his golfing"buddies". Seriously if the people could rise up that would be the best way to get rid of him,but he has kept just about all of the aid that has been sent for himself and his military. very little if any has gotten to the people. So if you were N Korean and wanted to eat joining the military was and is your best bet.

Exactly why I think the nuclear activity is an illustration of that!  Also hate to think what he's capable of.... or how difficult he will be to deal with!  :?

Mebbe we could see if Prince Bandar would get ol' Kim Jung to swap them nukes fer a few cases o' that fancy wine he likes an' some heatin' oil fer the winter 'fore somebody makes him a better offer. Throw in some Dapper Dan pomade an' I bet we could seal the deal.

Accordin' to the AP, "North Korea agreed Tuesday to rejoin six-nation nuclear disarmament talks in a surprise diplomatic breakthrough three weeks after the communist regime conducted its first known atomic test. A U.S. envoy said the talks could resume as early as November.

The White House hailed the decision. “We welcome the announcement and look forward to resuming the talks soon,” Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said."

Sounds promisin', anyway.
