I am new, please excuse my silly random posts. Forgive me, I'm ranting. I would love it if we could get a historical Summerfield Organization for teens and children going. It would be an enriching experience, plus it would give me someone other to talk to than ramble to my friends at the school about history history history I Also understand though, that we would have a lack of interest in today's society and don't even get me started on what costs are needed. |

Welcome to the forum Writingrider!! All random thoughts are welcome here in the Much Ado About Nothing (MAAN) Forum! The historical society for our local youth sounds like a wonderful idea. Mrs.Etta Reid or Mrs. Linda Southard (Contact info available at Town Hall)would be good sources of info about Summerfield's history as well as our own forum participant, Wepete. |

Well then, while I'm at it, my friends and I want to raise some money to do something with the Hillsdale Brick Store. We're starting to organize little things like lemonade stands in her neighborhood and I sell painted horse shoes. Then there's always the ever beloved carwash and bake sale...*too much ranting* We wanted to raise enough to maybe fix it up and maybe if onther people see that teens want the history back, they'll pitch in and we'll have something! Alas are the dreams that come forth form my keyboard...confessions of the lunchroom table *shakes head* all too amist dream clouds for thine own good...for said building that hath stood the tests of time and...ok, I'll stop the silly stuff now. Did anybody understand what I said? |

Sounds like spring fever is working on a teen to me. |

Where is this, and what is it, writingrider? What can we do to keep this kind of thing from happening???? |

well, this building is beyond saving, i do belive. it's at the intersection of Deboe road and Old Oak Ridge road (I think). I don't know what we can do yet, but I really think we need to take action and stop this from happening to all of these historical buildings. |

I didn't think Paul Milam was going to tear down the Saunders Inn. Lets ask Patty or Sandra to check on what he is doing. |

Nice goin', Jane! I saw where you posted in the other section doing just what you suggested -- asking NW Observer staff to look into what's going on here..... Thanks!♥♥♥ |

writingrider wrote: *ranting mode* According to Paul, he's not tearing down the building, but he's also not fixing it up at this point. He just had the trees and stuff cleared out from around it. We've had several people ask us about this, and we've put it in our Questions Our Readers Have Asked section in this week's paper. Last edited on Jul 20th, 2006 01:03 pm by S. Smith |

No problem. But I'm with you. I'm afraid if something isn't done with the building soon, it may just fall down. It has such great history -- that would be a shame! |

writingrider: One of the days last week after picking my son up from camp, I drove back to Stokesdale via 150 (connecting at Eversfield). Fortunately I remembered to look for the lodge almost as soon as I thought about where I was, because I hadn't made the connection with where Deboe Road is. I saw it, and can understand your concern. Then I saw the picture, along with question and answer, in the paper about it. I wonder what will happen to it, though, if nothing is done to keep it from further deteriorating? |

Paul Milam has offered the Sauners Inn to anybody who will move it . He also talked about refurbishing it and using it in his commercial development right there. One of the things he mentioned was as a library. It is such a beautiful, even in its delapidated state, building. It will be so sad if something can't be done. I think Paul did a wonderful job of renovating the old Hoskins House and hope he will have some ideas for the Saunders Inn. I think the fact he cleared around it may indicate he is thinking about his possibilities. |

One thing to consider is grant money... not only from the historical societies, but also the library affiliates. Sometimes there are funds available for restoration of old buildings & there may even be funds available for libraries in the suburbs.... whatever is available & could be tapped into would be of great benefit for both saving the building & getting a library for us NW folks! I don't know where to suggest you begin searching for available funds, but the internet would be a good start. |
