This isn't exactly a survey, but I didn't know where to put it and this seemed to be the most logical place ... We need your suggestions for our next special section, scheduled for June 16.  It will be called "Welcome to the Neighborhood" and is intended to be a resource that newcomers and old-timers alike will keep and refer to throughout the year. We want to include every imaginable kind of information pertaining to our northwest area that you could want or need.  Have ideas for what to include, photos of scenes from "Around Town," suggestions for "old-timers" who'd be willing to let us interview them and share some of their early memories of our towns?  We're open to suggestions!

Some of the things we know the Neighborhood section should include are:  Community profiles and history; contact information for town councils; youth organizations; school listings, PTA Presidents, Principals, etc.; photos -- lots of photos; listing of utilities (including things like, what number to use for white goods to be picked up at your house), restrictions on how far your trees can be planted in relation to the power lines, etc.; dog leash rules; timeline for important milestones in each town.  I could go on, but let me stop here and see what you all might add to our list.

Thanks for thinking -- you've been a great help so far on past surveys and we always appreciate your input!

Oh, and one more thing -- if any of you by chance have any time that you can help us track down some of the resource-type information, verify phone numbers, etc. it would be most appreciated. We'll be glad to give you a public thanks in the special section for helping us, and a Northwest Observer 10-year anniversary sweatshirt or t-shirt.

Sweatshirt???  Did someone say Sweatshirt???   You know I've been trying to win one of those things! :D

Sounds like you have a great start on this section Patti.

Here are a few ideas.  Hope there is something you haven't thought of yet.

Kid Stuff:

A section on each school, introducing principals and PTA Presidents.  Contact info for school, bus office and website.  http://www.gscnc.com  Graduation requirements for Guilford County Schools.

Child Care: Explanation of ACES, Other area child care centers and point out that some offer transportation after school.

Summerfield Youth Council: Contact Persons Kim Jackson or Terry McLean. Website: http://www.summerfieldyouthcouncil.com  Email: SYCouncil@bellsouth.net

Extracurricular activities available for kids... Art classes, music lessons, gymnastics, that baseball place out there on Pleasant Ridge, swimming, cheerleading etc. YMCA

Also contact person and info for SRA (and whatever Oak Ridge and Stokesdale call their Rec associations)

Tutoring... I know several teachers at Summerfield used to tutor. Perhaps an email to each school asking for available tutors might be helpful.

Politics

Contact info for Towns and Town Councils

Contact info for Board of Education

Contact info for County Commissioners

Congressmen and Senators

Where to vote.... Where to register to vote

Family Stuff...

Where to buy groceries

Contact info for Cable, Power, Telephone and Cell providers etc.

Where are the libraries and book stores

Directions to Walmart and Home Depot. :D  Seriously, I know the big malls aren't in the NW, but a mention of where we shop if something isn't offered out here would be nice. (4 seasons, Friendly Center, that Wendover conglomeration, Oak Hollow etc.)  Would the NW merchants have a fit about this???

Local Vets, Doctors, Dentists etc.

Where to get your COMPUTER worked on....

Restaurants

Goodness... I might have to do another list tomorrow!  There's so much!

Wish we had some input from newcomers themselves.

They could really offer valuable input on this subject!!!

OH! And I love the HISTORICAL ideas you mentioned.  (Maybe Mr. Gordon would share some of his.  I loved seeing the one you printed last week that he did)

The locals (old timers) would be sure not to BYPASS this section if it were peppered with old local photos and history blurbs.

One more idea.

Put a comment in how folks can link their MVP card from Food Lion to "good causes" around town.  Obviously my favorite is the NWHS band, but there are other worthy causes.

This benefit is not well publicized, would help some local organizations that need it.

For school stuff, schedule for the year and how to contact BOE members and GCS administrators... Even though it is on the web site and you are posting that, not everyone  has easy access to the internet....♥♥♥

Restaurants

I'm rather a "newbie" myself, but with the help of Yahoo Maps, I've been able to find my favorite chain store for clothing - Goody's!  The only one nearby is in Winston... which from Stokesdale is about a half hr drive!  For groceries.... I like the Food Lion on 220 but also drive up to Madison to the new WalMart... which is only about 12 miles from here.... but also frequent our Bi-Rite!  (Those are some real nice folks at the Bi-Rite!)

As for Local Vet... up here in Stokesdale, we have a "sattelite" office of one of the vets in Summerfield... we've gotten good service both for vet care and for bording!

Restaurants is a hot topic for everyone... especially with the "new millinium schedules" we all deal with... mom running in the door around 6pm and tired from a hard day at the office.. you can only take so much hamburger helper!  We like BJ's which is very close to our house... and for a special treat... we go to the Hillbilly Hideaway!

I might get an "off-topic" :?  but wanted to try to answer some of your questions... the "New Business" forum in the NWO helps too!

Everyone at the NWO deserves an "atta-girl" or "atta-boy" whichever is fit.. ya'll do a stand up job for us folks in the NW territory! "Yaaaaay!" Keep up the good work...... :dude:

We finally went to Sirloin's on 220... man what portions!  My daughter & I got the chicken salad & it was more than we could ever eat... but most of all my husband could NOT finish his steak... and the man is a real steak lover!  Anyone with a healthy appetite will surely get enough up there...

If it is Utility information you are interested in... here's my input...

Duke Power.......800-777-9898 or http://www.dukepower.com

Time Warner Cable.... 379-0200 or http://www.triadtwcable.com

Stokesdale folks.. Water 299-6002 but to get it turned on you have to go to the town hall before 2:00 pm (it closes early every day.)

Stokesdale Vet Clinic... 643-0515... they also do grooming!

Bell South.... 888-757-6500 or http://www.bellsouth.com

Stokesdale Specific Stuff...

BJ's Diner.... 644-1500 (mean hot wings!)

Bi-Rite Grocery 643-5249

Family Diner...643-8853

Sun Trust in Stokesdale... 643-4134

Domino's in Oak Ridge 644-0665

zHole in the Wall Restaurant... 668-0993

Eagle Family Practice in Oak Ridge... 644-0111

And... don't forget the County Commissioners Contact Info is http://gcms0004.co.guilford.nc.us/commissioners/index.php

So... Now y'all know what I like to do... EAT.. and where I do most of my biz... hope this helps your "list" gathering!
