Should political candidates be allowed to campaign on open forums with protection from scrutiny?
Should moderators take into consideration the fact that once someone openly announces their candidacy in an open forum, they should now be subject to the scrutiny of the forum participants, in a non-threatening, civil manner, of course, without the moderator "protecting" their own choices of candidates?

Cuz, it certainly seems like the Northwest Observer will not let posters recite the past voting records of incumbents (perhaps out of fear of the incumbent contradicting themselves and their voting record).
Challengers beware. The Northwest Observer doesn't want and isn't going to allow a level playing field in the upcoming political forums and debates. In other words, some candidates are being treated more equal than others.
Politics, does indeed, make some pretty strange bedfellows.

Cuz, the other question I am wondering, is if the Northwest Observer will allow posters to name names of candidates who do not have jobs? Or receive public assistance for their family support? Or who send their wife off to work 3 jobs to support their family while the candidate stays home all day watching television and playing on their computer?
I wonder whether these issues would even be deemed newsworthy by the Northwest Observer for local citizens to know in formulating a decision on how and for whom they should vote.
Lots of rumors going around here in Stokesdale Cuz......

What do you think the turn out would be if the NWO (or another group) hosted a candidate forum? I'm talking about an old-fashioned face-to-face, meet 'em and greet 'em event.
The reason that I ask is that the online forum, while useful and interesting does have its limitations. Protocol and courtesy sometimes will take precedent over substance and specifics - especially when one is faced with "fluff" questions.
Anyway, I just wonder how many folks would come to an event that allows for all of the issues to be debated and some of this other stuff that's possibly important to be aired in public - or not. Remember, candidates don't have to answer any questions, but they do have to respect the results from not being open, honest, and transparent.

I think that a public forum would be great. I personally have participated in one before, and you get the opportunity to get your message out. Provided that's what you want to do.
I'm not sure how many of Stokesdale's candidates would participate, but after the things that have happened on this forum, the NWO is probably not the right entity to organize it. Not saying they wouldn't do a good job, just that too much has gone on here and in print.
Maybe we could get one of the churches that does not have a dog in the fight( no offense, Mr. Vick) to sponsor such a forum.
Any one have any ideas?

Oh well, gotta be careful, Raven. This is about politics, and they watch my posts like a hawk. How about those candidates!

I would have a hard time voting for that candidate. Very skeptical eyesight, IMO.

Cuz, if I were a candidate or campaign manager for a candidate, I would try to get some friends and neighbors in various subdivisions and different parts of the community and different age groups to sponsor informal get togethers such as cook-outs, coffees, weekend ham biscuit breakfasts and invite 10 to 20 of their friends and neighbors to meet a specific candidate or small group of candidates. Consideration might even be given for several candidates to try and combine their efforts in reaching out in this manner in toward a much larger group of voters.
Other invited sponsored events such as a Saturday brunswick stew or pig pickin' (which a campaign might even consider paying for) allow even larger groups to meet you or your candidate and the costs on a relative basis are much less expensive than newspaper or other advertising, while much more effective. These types of events allow folks the opportunity to have real conversations with candidates and to find out where they really stand on issues.
A brunswick stew political rally we had in Stokesdale at the old school cafeteria 20 years ago had over 100 voters in attendance and one held down at the Old Mill in Oak Ridge had over 300 voters attending. So I know these types of events will work successfully in drawing crowds of voters.
The added bonus is that if the individual, couple or family in the community who sponsors these individual events is well respected, then the candidate almost automatically stands to pick up a large percentage of the votes from the invited group.
The wider the cross section of citizens who can be exposed to your candidate or candidacy, the more successful your candidate is likely to be. And nothing beats positive word of mouth advertising in politics from friends and neighbors of a candidate. If you think about it, with only 15 or 20 such informal group functions, you or your candidate could well become well acquainted with several hundred high value targeted voters (those who actually vote); more than enough to win almost any local political race.
I have attended and sponsored several such functions over the years, and have been encouraging two or three of the Stokesdale candidates in this election cycle to do the same.

Mr. Flynt,
Why are you not a candidate?
You seem to have very strong views, why not Run?

For several simple reasons: I absolutely hate going to meetings and the Stokesdale Town Council has a meeting once a month.
One can have much more power and influence by working behind the scenes and below radar.
I don't need the ego fix.
But who knows: there might come the day when I change my mind.
But given the new fangled concept of dual residency, I am thinking about running for Mayor of New York City (after Mayor Bloomberg retires of course).

As a Post Script, I would add that I have been privileged to have been the campaign manager for 28 candidates in various races. My candidates won 27 out of 28 of those races, and the 28th candidate lost by only 8 votes against a much larger 'ticket' in a partisan race in a year when one political party didn't do so well at the polls.
Additionally, I have consulted with and been involved in dozens more. Those races have included several gubernatorial, US Senatorial races, congressional and State Council races.
I spent one whole year traveling all over North Carolina as an aide with the then NC Attorney General during his successful race for the US Senate seat formerly held by Senator Sam Ervin. And then years later, spent quite the considerable time traveling with the candidate who successfully ran for and won the seat as NC Attorney General.
Politics is more of a hobby than a vocation with me. Managing campaigns is altogether much more fun and fulfilling for me than being the candidate.
I'm an old political junkie to tell you the truth. Politics and political campaigning gets in your blood, and once it does, you can't get it out.

Yea, Jim, I remember going to one of those political get togethers by accident once.
It was at a cabin on a lake behind a well known Oak Ridge democrat's home. Quite a gathering, and very memorable.
Can definitely sway the voters.

I well remember that one Cuz. Pearl and Harmon were there too!
It was a good one too. No one ever did it better than Buster and Edna. Or ever could.
Why else is Oak Ridge light years away from Summerfield & Stokesdale by any measure of progress?
Those certainly were the good old days!
