Jim, The Board of Directors is elected at the annual meeting of the fire department, which is held the 4th Tuesday in July. Elected for a new 2-year term July 25 were Wayne Southern, Don Hill, Bill Sorrell, Stuart Chandler, James Kallam and Archie McGee. The other Board members are Sammy Pegram, Ray Joyner, Tim Kallam, John Flynt, Seth Strayer and Anthony Vaughn. I know that the Stokesdale fire district extends beyond the town limits, so maybe some of the Board members live within the district but outside the town limits. Why not ask the Board directly? Sam Pegram chairs it. It's my understanding that anyone can run. I've attended these meetings for several years, and sometimes there are many folks running and other times there are only enough to fill the vacancies. If there are more running than positions available, then they have a team of volunteers count and verify who was elected. I believe the Auxiliary sometimes helps with this, and there have been times that it took quite a while because there were so many running and so many attending the meeting and voting.

Jim, While we all feel for this young man, there is no way we can know what the whole story is -- and it IS a personnel issue between employee and employer. We have no way of knowing what extenuating cirucumstances there were, what other things might play into this action, or if indeed this action has been taken.

We are all entitled to our opinion about it, but the bottom line is that this young man, as well as the two others with him, and the truck driver, as well as countless others who could've been victims of his actions, are lucky to be alive. I'm sure there are specific expectations of anyone driving one of those trucks as they approach any intersection to make sure it is clear of traffic before the driver proceeds. Obviously that intersection at that time wasn't clear and our whole town is very fortunate that no lives were lost.

I don't see how we can second-guess whatever action was taken or not taken without having all of the facts.

Isn't it somewhat surprising though that with women comprising around 50% of the general population of Stokesdale, that the Fire District hasn't nominated or elected one single woman to serve on the Stokesdale Fire District Board of Directors? Aren't some of the women on this Forum and in Stokesdale offended by that? Haven't these men folk realized that the glass ceiling has been broken?

Thanks for sticking up for us women, Jim, but it could be that women would be welcome to serve but none have volunteered. If I were one of these "offended" women (which, by the way, as a forum participant I'm in no way offended merely by the fact that no women are serving here), I'd be checking out why no women are serving and think about volunteering or joining with other like-minded people and fielding a candidate of our own.

If I found out that the FD wouldn't let any of the "little ladies" of the town serve simply because of their sex, that would be a different story. I'm all for making things equal, but sometimes it's not reasonable.

How many minorities serve on the board? How many people with disabilities? I acknowledge that these comparisons aren't "apples to apples" because women do make up roughly half of the population, but if the board is comprised of, say, white men over the age of 50 that are Methodists, that doesn't mean there's necessarily discrimination going on. Maybe they're the only ones who volunteered and no minority race women under 30 who are Baptists wanted to serve (not that they weren't allowed by the "good ole boys" to).

Good points, Sandra! Well stated. I certainly haven't heard about women wanting to serve but not being allowed to......????

Excuse me, Jim, but I find that offensive.

Just because we said we haven't seen any indication that the Fire Dept Board of Directors has deliberately kept women from serving doesn't mean that we would allow it to happen. Or that we would condone it.

How are Board members usually recruited? Are they? Or do people just put their name in to be considered and all are placed on a ballot?

I think you have tended to make it sound as though a conspiracy is going on, and I'm just saying I've neither seen nor heard evidence of it.

Keep digging jim. I am curious now. Will these examples also correlate to the general history of stokesdale?

Pappy finds those remarks offensive, too. I applaud yer zeal to expose corruption an' discrimination (or whatever it is you got cornered up yonder), but don't be sayin' Macca an' Sandra endorse such things, passively or otherwise. I think it's purty clear they don't.
