Dear Editor:
This is to advise you that I personally spoke with "Sticky" Burch and asked him if he would be willing to write a letter of endorsement for Berkley Blanks. He said he would be glad to. There was just one catch - he asked me to write it and said he would sign it. He told me that he did not have a computer, nor a fax. I did just that with his input, he reviewed it by phone, and he saw no need to make changes. The letter was ok'd by him on Tuesday, 10/17. The deadline for the N & R was 10/18 at noon, so we got it faxed asap. Later, after some questions surfaced, "Sticky" told me that he thought we were going to bring it by his house, because he thought he had to personally sign it. I told him on the phone that we would put his phone number on it so that it could be verified. If there was no phone number on it, that was our error, however, there was absolutely no intent to deceive anyone. I spoke with "Sticky" and he assured me that he was fine with it.
I am sorry if there was confusion brought on by this letter, but I would never write a letter and sign someone's name to it. This was done with the total consent of Walter A. "Sticky" Burch, regardless of what you may have been told.

Seems to me that you should have just written a letter and signed your own name instead of goin' to all that trouble and then "borrowing" someone else's.

Logic would tell us that if someone cannot take the time to sit down and write (even by hand) an endorsement of someone's political candidacy, that any other forthcoming 'endorsement' is more or less tepid in their support for that candidate.
With all of the other endorsements from almost every other notable person as well as almost every organization directly or indirectly connected to law enforcement that Sheriff Barnes has earned, I guess the one from Sticky is about the only one he missed.
Blanks simply did not and has not made the case for a change in the leadershiip of our Guilford County Sheriff's Department.
Everyone should take the time to read the editorial comments by the Rhino Times Editor (who endorsed Sheriff Barnes by the way) in regards to Blanks and ask themselves if that is the kind of person they wish occupying the high position of Guilford County Sheriff. I know that I don't.

You got that right, Mr Jim! I hear they like Blanks up in Illinois. Maybe he could work at that infamous Cook County jail.
BJ knows what he's doin', an' he does it well.
As far as the letter and the explanation for it: nice try.

Sassy (and others reading this post), I personally spoke with Mr. Burch by phone. He told me himself that he did not write the letter. That was good enough for me. Had he okayed it, it seems like he would have told me that the letter was written with his approval. Regardless of the explanation you've given, the fact remains that a letter was sent to us (and other newspapers as well) by someone who represented themselves as Mr. Burch.
Mr. Burch initially told me that he didn't really want to make a big deal out of the misrepresentation because he didn't want to "hurt either one of those boys" (Berkley or BJ) because he had known both of them for years. I told him I understood that position, but that in my opinion, this misrepresentation was the same as a lie. He told me to proceed as I felt best, at which point I wrote the correction which went in our paper. He called me back a couple of hours later, said he had thought about it, and he believed I was absolutely correct -- that this action was no better than a lie and agreed it was good to let readers know.
Perhaps many of us learned a lesson from this one. I would hope that in the future, if you (or anyone) writes a letter for someone, make sure that they agree to it and approve it. I know we learned a lesson as well -- we will now verify the writer of all letters sent to us, something we hadn't had to do before simply because we trusted people to be who they said they were.

In light of Sandra's comments, I think it begs the question as to whether or not Mr. Blanks was personally aware of and gave his consent to this misrepresentation of Sticky Burch's letter of endorsement?
If he was, it bespeaks of complicity in misrepresentation and if he wasn't it reflects a stunning lack of knowledge of and supervision of what subordinates might be doing. Traits which do not bode well for his proposed management of a sheriff's department here or anywhere else.
Desperate political campaigns do desperate things. And the actions taken reflect a campaign clearly beyond desperation.

S. Smith - I have no reason to lie about this, no matter what else may have been said. I wouldn't do anything to hurt Sticky either, but I know the total and complete circumstances and stand by them. I too, have spoken to him since this mess hit the fan. In any case, I will not respond to any other posts, so ya'll can say what you like. And, actually, I did learn a lesson out of this. I won't be so trusting in the future. I apologize if this caused you and your paper a concern. You seem to have enough problems without this.

It was big of you to try to clear the air Sassy. Hopefully you'll consider posting in other areas of the forum. Just be sure to sign them "Sassy".
If you do come back, We'd like to hear why you (not Sticky) feel that Blanks could do a better job than BJ. That's just a mystery to me.
