Nice goin', Jane! I saw where you posted in the other section doing just what you suggested -- asking NW Observer staff to look into what's going on here..... Thanks!♥♥♥

yep, they're at it again. now they're tearing down the saunders inn. and i love that building's apperance too. i really wish there was something i could do to stop all this...to make a difference

According to Paul, he's not tearing down the building, but he's also not fixing it up at this point. He just had the trees and stuff cleared out from around it. We've had several people ask us about this, and we've put it in our Questions Our Readers Have Asked section in this week's paper.

No problem. But I'm with you. I'm afraid if something isn't done with the building soon, it may just fall down. It has such great history -- that would be a shame!

writingrider: One of the days last week after picking my son up from camp, I drove back to Stokesdale via 150 (connecting at Eversfield). Fortunately I remembered to look for the lodge almost as soon as I thought about where I was, because I hadn't made the connection with where Deboe Road is. I saw it, and can understand your concern. Then I saw the picture, along with question and answer, in the paper about it. I wonder what will happen to it, though, if nothing is done to keep it from further deteriorating?

Paul Milam has offered the Sauners Inn to anybody who will move it . He also talked about refurbishing it and using it in his commercial development right there. One of the things he mentioned was as a library. It is such a beautiful, even in its delapidated state, building. It will be so sad if something can't be done.  I think Paul did a wonderful job of renovating the old Hoskins House and  hope he will have some ideas for the Saunders Inn. I think the fact he cleared around it may indicate he is thinking about his possibilities.

One thing to consider is grant money...  not only from the historical societies, but also the library affiliates.  Sometimes there are funds available for restoration of old buildings & there may even be funds available for libraries in the suburbs.... whatever is available & could be tapped into would be of great benefit for both saving the building & getting a library for us NW folks!  I don't know where to suggest you begin searching for available funds, but the internet would be a good start.  ;)
