With the growing concern for gang violence in our city and county areas, I believe that I need to get involved in local information sessions to learn more about the growing problem. Believe it or not it will eventually affect not only the southeast region of Guilford County, but also the Northwest area. Some of our own kids are thinking about joining or even associating with gangs or gang members. If we are not careful and open minded we will find ourselves fighting to keep our own children from the influence. What separates us? Some of our kids long for the same things; friendship, family, belonging to something and whatever else pulls at their inner most being. We see the problem rising around our city and we really dont say much about it. I believe because it has not really landed in our part of town. NW has had some issues with gang violence just last year. No not mentioned in the headlines, but gang violence and attire has been seen and experienced right under our noses. What are we to do? I say we get involved now before it gets worse.
Ernest Cuthbertson, an expert on Gangs is giving an information session to the local communities experiencing this problem free of charge. I believe it would be a good place to start. It will be held at A&T University's, Webb Hall, located at E. Market St and N. Benbow Rd. The time and date is August 28th from 6:30pm -8:30pm. You can ask questions. If you can come out, I believe it will be informative and eye-opening. Our city is changing and changing fast. We have had several shootings both in the south and north parts of the county involving gang retaliation. Its all in the news.

| Much obliged fer startin' this topic, gotobeme. We've been hearin' about gangs around here for a few years. Some say it's comin' an' some say it's already here. A lot of us have been ignorin' it either way. It's worrisome. I reckon we'd better try an' understand what's a-goin' on an' why. Pappy's fairly ignorant on the subject, so I'm much obliged to you fer bringin' it up.

You know, maybe if society gave these young gang members a free six month membership in the 'rock busters' chain gang, they might decide that gang membership wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

I agree Jim, do the crime do the time. But if they are incarcerated with gang members whats to stop it from growing. You know ,the getting back at the man syndrome.
There has to be an alternative placed before them other than than back on the streets , hallways text messaging etc from their old "friends".

| If it was as simple as lockin' 'em up, I think we could whup the problem purty easy. But it seems like we need to look at the root causes of why the gangs are so attractive to young'uns. Seems like they're tryin' to find somethin' they cain't find at home an' end up gettin' caught up in somethin' they didn't bargain fer. I don't mind havin' the punishment fit the crime, but there seems to be a whole lot more goin' on here that needs to be taken into account.

| I agree that we need to search for answers as to why kids are getting involved with gangs. There may very well be something missing from home. In that respect, then maybe we as a community need to step in and help these kids before they make a mistake. We need to get kids involved in community activities, help them in school and volunteer opportunities. It's about building confidence and self esteem in them. Giving them a sense of purpose. We need more adults volunteering their time in schools and other organizations to help those in need.
