JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THE STOKESDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS HAVING THERE ANNUAL MEETING ON TUESDAY JULY 24 AT 7:00 PM.  ALOT OF PEOPLE NEED TO ATTEND BECAUSE THERE ARE CERTAIN ISSUES THAT NEED TO BE TAKING CARE OF. THERE ARE BOARD MEMBERS THAT THERE SONS WORK FOR THEM AND ITS NOT FAIR TO THE PEOPLE THAT WORK THERE TO HAVE A FATHER AND SON THING GOING ON.  Edited by S. Smith

Has anyone else noticed the phenomenon we have going on here in Stokesdale, wherein every time a town councilman leaves office, he also leaves town. 3 out of the last 3 and counting.....The real estate signs just went up on another one this week.

They just can't seem to leave town fast enough either right before, during or right after they leave office. I guess they got what they wanted and then left. Makes you wonder how much they REALLY cared about Stokesdale despite what they told voters back when they ran for office.

Jim, I think you're not presenting this as straghtforwardly as readers might think. We had one Council member who married after he was elected and moved to where his wife resided. I believe he had resided in Stokesdale all his life and still owns property here and maintains contact with this community. I know personally that he still helps Parks and Rec when questions come up about the current property. He was also just re-elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Stokesdale Fire Dept., something he is entitled to do as a property owner. The person who was APPOINTED to replace him purchased land and built a new home in Rockingham County. He had resided here for around 20 years. His children have now all left home and he and his wife decided they wanted a different place now. BOTH OF THESE GENTLEMEN (along with the family of the second, and likely of the first, I just don't have personal knowledge of that) MADE GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS TOWN WHILE LIVING HERE and I think you do a great disservice to both with your post. As for the third, I'm not sure I know to whom you refer.

As voted on by our original "elected" TC, 3 out of 5 voted to contribute enuff $$ to the Stokesdale Community Park to keep the bank from taking possession of same. These 3 heroes were A B Fulp, Powell Shelton, and Jesse Joyce.

In my opinion, this was a worthy and galant decision by the then council.

This is by no means meant to be an all-inclusive list:

Along those same lines that "Cuz" mentions, through the years Town Council has provided funding for improvements to the park -- lights, bleachers, etc.

It has also provided funding to the fire department, enabling the purchase of new vehicles and other equipment.

For most of the time since the town has been incorporated, Stokesdale has also had additional law enforcement in the town, as Stokesdale pays for a deputy sheriff to be assigned to the town for 40 hours per week in addition to the coverage already provided  by the Guilford County Sheriff's Dept. This deputy is also provided with a vehicle that is equipped to help him carry out his duties.

The town has also assisted the school in obtaining new computers, books and with a new sign in front of the school several years ago.

Town Council sponsors the annual Holiday Parade and purchased banners for the town that are hung during the holiday season. This parade is a very good way to bring other people to the town and provide goodwill for it and our neighbors.

Since I followed you onto the Park Board, I'll field that one, Cuz.

Ms. Hardin was not a real ardent Park supporter. I left more than one TC meeting steaming over how she treated us, but in retrospect, I think she was merely trying to be fiscally responsible. She remebered the financial trouble the Park got into at one point, and just wanted to be sure the Town was well served by any Park appropriations. As for Mr. Jones, he has been very supportive, voting in favor of all financial aid requests for the Park if I remember correctly. I think he did take a different tack with the new football association (which by the way, is not part of Stokesdale Parks & Recreation).

I will say I think the TCs have missed some chances to implement policies that would have benefited the Town greatly.

Possum,
I would listen with great interest if you would expand upon the above. I for one am always ready to know how I could do better.

Three instances come to mind:

1- Failure to approve the NC 68 scenic corridor ordinance. A lost opportunity to maintain an attractive roadside appearance and to assist in traffic control on a very busy highway.

2- The SouthRich partnership offered to connect any business property in the town core to the sewage system they were building for the old Blue Bell building that was being renovated. No one would have been forced to connect to the system, but the properties that did would have had a much better potential to produce new business in the "old town"- perhaps even a coffee shop or grill which the town could certainly use. TC did not approve the proposal. This was a win-win situation; all the risk and cost was being assumed by SouthRich and the town would have benefitted if the project was successful.

3- a general failure to inact more restrictive residential development criteria and to actively promote open space preservation to a greater extent than the county's plan does. I've read much in the forum about preserving the property owner's right to their land's "highest and best" use, but I've heard very little about how development impacts every single resident of the town and has a direct negative impact on quality of life. Yes, the landowner that sold the property profited, the developer profited, and the new homeowner improved their own quality of life, but every traveler on the town's roads, every taxpayer footing the bill for new school construction and other infrastructure paid a real price in dollars and life quality so that everyone involved in the development project could have what they wanted. Lets do what's best for the entire town, not just property owners and developers.

Unlike some residents though I do think the TC has had some significant successes. The financial assistance provided to the SFD, Stokesdale School, and the Park; purchase and maintenance of the emergency generator; installation of the water system, and provision of sheriff patrols have definitely improved the town. All without invoking a town property tax- pretty remarkable I think.
